BLADE Magazine Cutlery Hall-Of-Fame© member Tim Leather-man had a great idea. It just took a while to convince others that his tool was worthy of production. The bird’s-beak pommel is what it sounds like—look at the handle from the side and you will see the stylized profile of a small bird. It’s not a long beak like a woodpecker’s but a short, understated one, not unlike a cardinal’s. Along with ABS master smith JW Randall and ABS journeyman smiths Craig Camerer and Mace Vitale, Ellis is one of four Forged in Fire champions featured in the special story by Erin Healy on page 74. “I am a produce farmer and also work in my family’s greenhouse business selling flowers and vegetable plants. I always have at least one or two pocketknives with me. For work I use my Schrade Old Timer a lot. It has one blade 4 inches long that is strong and durable. The other knife I carry often is a special Swiss Army model that I use to carve roosters and hens from branches. Chris, the man who taught me how to carve the roosters, gave it to me. The trail of the fabled bowie knife is long and winding. From the Sandbar Fight to the Alamo and beyond, its fact, mystery and myth have become the stuff of legend. The trail extends nearly 200 years, and for half his life Chris Nolen of West Monroe, Louisiana, has traveled down it. For sure, he’s gone further than most. Last issue we did the super Rambo extravaganza special but were unable to include some special designs by Jeff Knox. Jeff was inspired to make knives by one of the makers of the original Rambo knives—BLADE Magazine Cutlery Hall-Of-Fame© member Gil Hibben. Son of a military collectibles shop owner, Knox grew up attending gun and military shows. As his knife collecting addiction grew, he focused on the more unusual of World War II knives. Among what he and others call the Mount Rushmore of Wo rld Wa r II knifemakers was Eugene Stone.
