Kwajalein Bladesmith of the Year The Kwajalein Junior/Senior High School annual awards assembly went well, as always. I might be biased but I truly feel that our “Bladesmith Of The Year” got the biggest applause. The winner for the second year in a row, Meghan Day, truly has the talent to someday earn her ABS master smith rating, and her parents are 100 percent supportive. Unfortunately, for the upcoming 2018-2019-school term Meghan could not work industrial technology into her senior year schedule, so she talked me into adding an unofficial after-school class period so that she and her twin brother can craft more knives. At first glance, the San Francisco knife on Dennis Friedly’s table at the 2018 BLADE Show might have looked plain compared to his other ornate art knives. The Wyoming knifemaker with an art background and 45 years of experience making knives has crafted some showstoppers in his career. On one bowie he displayed at the show, gold inlay blossomed on the blade spine. Forty-four sapphires and 12 diamonds studded the guard. The kukri—aka khukuri, cookri or kookeri—is most famous as the combat knife of the Nepalese Gurkhas, yet is also a working knife of the native people of Nepal. Variations of the design are associated with what would classify as different models. As far as I know, the only models consistently made with a full tang and scales attached are the military versions. Outside of handle and size variations, the kukri has a couple of distinct features. First, it is a true weight-forward design. Weight forward often confuses people. Just because a knife has a long and/or heavy blade does not mean it is a weight-forward design. When seconds count, rescue knives can shatter car windows and slice through seatbelts or clothing to help extricate a vehicular accident victim. Those few seconds literally can mean the difference between life and death. Consequently, it’s important that rescue knives be well made as well as readily available to first responders. The USS Nevada (SSBN-733) is a United States Navy Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine that has been in commission since 1986. Its homeport is Bangor, Washington, and its motto is Silent Sentry. At press time, Percy Richardson was working on a knife for President George H.W. Bush made of the steel and decking from the USS San Jacinto, a light aircraft carrier. Bush served on the San Jacinto during World War II. It was the San Jacinto from which Bush took off in his torpedo bomber only to be hit by Japanese anti-aircraft fire during a bombing run. Though his aircraft’s engine caught fire, Bush was able to head back toward the San Jacinto before bailing out over the Pacific Ocean, where he was rescued by a U.S. submarine. Richardson indicated the knife will be displayed in the Bush Library in College Station, Texas.…

Capt. Ryan J. Heilman is commanding officer of the Blue Crew and captain of the USS Nevada (SSBN-73). He enlisted in the Navy as a machinist mate, nuclear option, and was selected for the Nuclear Enlisted Commissioning Program in 1991. He was commissioned from Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida, in 1994. He was assigned to the PCU Wyoming (SSBN 742) in 1996, where he served as Navigation Division Officer and in several other positions. In 2002 he reported as Navigator/Operations Officer to the USS Nevada. He reported to Trident Training Facility, Bangor, Washington, in 2005 as the Engineering Training Department Director. The special 35th anniversary Rambo edition we did for the January issue was one of our best-sellers in a while, but David Morrell’s John Rambo was fictitious. Harry Archer, on the other hand, was real. A close friend of BLADE Magazine Cutlery Hall-Of-Fame© member Bob Loveless, Harry was a CIA operative who saw a lot of action during the Vietnam War, among other places. Loveless made a number of knives that were used in Vietnam, including several Big Bear models he was commissioned by Archer to make for high-ranking officers—including at least one for Harry. According to BLADE Magazine Cutlery Hall-Of-Fame© member James L. Batson, “the silver-mounted, guard-less, coffin-handle bowie knife made by James Black has the distinction of being the only knife design pictured in the Black/Buzzard Daguerreotype and to be painted in Tahchee’s sash.” Charles Bird King painted the portrait of Cherokee Chief Tahchee in Washington, Arkansas Territory, in February and March of 1837. Batson indicated Tahchee acquired the Black knife when the chief lived below the Red River. According to Access Genealogy, Tahchee was born circa 1790 and died circa 1848. Jerry Hossom had that twinkle in his eye again. This time it was by his table at BLADE Show 2018 in Atlanta, where he was all fired up about the latest set he had made for Capt. Ryan Heilman, USN, of the USS Nevada (SSBN-733).
