BLADE Show Suggestions I just read the article on the BLADE Show 2018 changes (page 10, September BLADE®) and found the part on the crowds of people blocking the hallways and how the badges, fire marshal issues and people trying to set up there display issues could possibly be solved in better ways. I have always found getting the badges in the morning to be quite a hassle of unnecessary long lines and precious time being wasted before you can enter the show. In my opinion it is a pretty inefficient system and without a doubt it is getting worse as the show grows. Could this not all be significantly reduced by simply mailing out the badges in advance? Machetes are useful tools both in agriculture and camping. The long blades excel at tasks such as clearing tall vegetation, from grass and weeds to saplings, to splitting wood for kindling. No matter which one you choose, keep in mind that in order to properly use a machete, let its blade shape and weight do most of the work. Some are weighty up front at the tip, which equates to momentum behind the swing to carry the blade through saplings and to withstand use with a baton. Arthur Washburn opted to do something different than his specialty of folders and the result is a super cool modified reproduction of an Army M7 bayonet. While his bayonet has the unmistakable M7 look, it exhibits a number of differences from the original Colt version manufactured by Universal Industries* that debuted in 1961, including a blade of double stainless ladder-pattern damascus and a grooved G-10 handle with skull-crusher. Washburn coated the mild steel fittings in a black oxide. Like the original, his version mounts on an AR-15 rifle. “All the fittings I machined myself,” he noted. “I drew everything up and CNC machined it.” About the only things he didn’t make are the screws. Concluded Washburn, “It was very labor intensive to get it to the standard of my folders.”…

Camp knife—the name conjures images of unlimited locations and scenarios. Is there a perfect knife for every scenario for a camp knife? The short answer is no. Most would agree that a camp knife would be some type of fixed blade. The argument can be made that a small axe or hatchet might be the right tool for the job. No doubt the axe would be excellent for breaking brush, converting logs or branches into kindling, etc. For most of the jobs around camp, an axe would find limited use—primarily the aforementioned jobs. The Carothers/Keffeler Competition Chopper used by Jo Carothers in the women’s division of the 2018 BLADE Show World Championship Cutting Competition conducted by BladeSports International is this issue’s cover knife. The knife is a collaboration between Carothers Performance Knives (CPK) and Dan Keffeler. The chopper sports a 10-inch-blade of Vanadis 4 Extra carbon steel and, with a Rockwell hardness of 63.5 HRC, is quite hard for enhanced edge holding. The handle is a hard rubber called ebonite. The knife weighs 23 ounces and is 15 inches overall. CPK’s list price for a similar piece: $750. The American Bladesmith Society celebrated another stellar year of ever-expanding membership, breathtaking knives and noteworthy contributions by its members at a special society reception the Saturday night of BLADE Show 2018 in Atlanta. Is the axe mankind’s oldest tool? It well could be argued that it is. In the academic fields of archeology and paleontology, it is surmised that either a stick or a rock are truly mankind’s oldest tools, both being readily available “as is.” In other words, requiring no need to adjust or modify to use for a task, they are usable when simply picked up off the ground. And it was believed for a long time that the use of these simple tools is what generally separated man from beast. However, we now know that many animals also use the same tools that early proto-humans did. Chimpanzees and monkeys, even birds, use sticks to poke into holes to gather grubs and termites.
