Court: Bali Ban Violates 2A According to the Knife Rights website (kniferights.org), on Aug. 7 a panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit held that Hawaii’s ban on butterfly/balisong knives violates the Second Amendment. Meanwhile, Knife Rights (KR) filed an amicus (friend of the court) brief in support of the appellants in the case of Teter v. Lopez. In its decision, the Court reversed the district court’s judgment in favor of Hawaii and remanded the case back to the district court “for further proceedings consistent with this opinion.” The Court also denied the appellees’ request to remand the case for further factual or historical development in light of New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass’n, Inc. v. Inspired by the split-handle folding knife made famous by the late, great custom knife-maker Barry Wood, the Imp by Darriel Caston is a clever keychain knife ideal for EDC. Like the Wood folder, the blade opens by pivoting one of the scales clockwise and closes by pivoting the same scale counterclockwise. At the same time, slots at the ends of the Imp’s scales accept a keychain when they’re open and form an enclosed elliptical oval to hold the keychain when they’re closed. Instead of a ball detent affixed to the blade to help hold the knife open and closed, Darriel uses magnets affixed to the handle. The Nessmuk Skinner (page 42) by Poland’s Luk Kuberski features Luk’s ample satin-blade-finishing skills, full-tang construction and a radiant ash maple burl handle. It all started with a stone. Held between the thumb and index finger, it could be used to cut things efficiently if the user learned how to keep the edge sharp. It was the birth of knife technology. The next step was to attach the stone to a stick. The stick handle afforded more versatility on how the stone blade could be used. Even though it started out looking like a mere piece of broomstick, there is some obvious utility in it since many knives today have the same simple shape. Gripping round sticks/knife handles of different diameters results in different ergonomic effects. The first example shows less than optimal grip strength with a thin handle having diminished contact area between the palm and the handle surface. The force is maximum when the thumb and fingertips are directed parallel to the palm. The second example favors a strong grip. The fingers are also able to wrap around the handle and there is more surface contact available. The third example is near the peak of biomechanical advantage. Grip strength might be a little improved from the second example or perhaps a little diminished. Not very different there. Importantly, the thumb and fingers can still cross over each other.
