Cashen Assumes the Reins ABS master smith Kevin Cashen’s term as the new chairman of the American Bladesmith Society officially began with the ABS annual meeting at BLADE Show 2024. Cashen was elected in a vote of the ABS board of directors this past winter. In his Matherton Forge in Hubbardston, Michigan, he forges a wide range of knives and swords, including daggers, hunters, bowies, fighters, camp knives, kitchen knives and more, including period pieces and those of damascus. He has been an ABS-approved instructor for over 20 years and has taught classes ranging from intro to bladesmithing for beginners to blade metallurgy for master instructors at such venues as local events, international symposiums, and colleges and universities. Kevin succeeds ABS master smith Steve Dunn, who passed away May 21.…

When I received the M07 Ranger Puukko from Peltonen Knives, I was really surprised to find that the Finnish company was using my favorite carbon steel, 80CRV2, my go-to blade material for the knives I make. It has suburb edge retention and a toughness equal to 5160 carbon steel. The TPV handle is firm but provides a great non-slip grip. However, the knife still has to come together as a comfortable cutter. BladeSports International coordinated the annual BLADE Show World Championship Cutting Competition, with Mr. and Mrs. James and Michael Clifton winning the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively. Barret Chrisman’s contemporary take on the classic Remington 1306 Bullet lockback combines tradition and hi-tech in one handsome custom pocketknife. Barret outfitted his repro with all cutting-edge materials, including a blade of Loki pattern damascus by Damasteel, a handle of checkered titanium that resembles jigging and a titanium bullet shield. “I’ve seen people jig titanium before but I wanted to try checkering, so I made up a custom pantograph template and tried it out,” he said.
