There are these sandbars that are exposed with the shifting tides and we were splashing around between them in this warm, pristine water - just me and my family. Multihulls are having a moment. In the five years between 2020 and 2024, BOAT International’s Global Order Book (which counts all superyachts over 24 metres LOA on order or in build) recorded more than a three-fold increase in the number of multihull projects. For the most part, the annual figure rose steadily from 22 in 2020 to 34 in 2021,42 in 2022 and 50 in 2023. However, 2024 saw the number in development jump to a record 72 units. Unless you travel by sail and never use the engines, there is no way. to be truly "green" on a boat. But a multi-pronged approach, such as the one applied on Asia, can help make a motor yacht more environmentally friendly, even while using conventional diesel. Start with naval architecture: a good hull with bulbous bow is more efficient and can save a significant amount of fuel over a season. A hybrid system, such as a PTI/PTO, allows for limited cruising using only part of the propulsion system (with generators or engines offline) and uses less diesel in the long run. After a drive along a clifftop that's wiggly and meandering enough to challenge the strongest of stomachs, I am greeted by a view that has drawn the world's superyachts to the Amalfi Coast for decades. Positano's terracotta rooftops spill down to a crescent black-sand beach, with the faint outline of Capri ahead, cloaked in a soft haze. All 55 rooms at Il San Pietro and its two restaurants offer various angles on this beautiful vista, which inspired Carlo "Carlino" Cinque to create the hotel back in 1970. The hotel's design would have stirred Antoni Gaudí's imagination with its curvaceous form (though it was Oscar Niemeyer who influenced Cinque). St John's Co-Cathedral, in the heart of Malta's capital city of Valletta, presents an austere exterior by the standards of Catholic architecture, with two boxy towers and a central door flanked by pillars. There's not much to see on the outside (it would seem), and most visitors file straight inside for the vaulted ceilings, adorned with paintings by the Italian artist Mattia Preti. When, in 2021, REV Ocean was found to sit too low in the water, the team behind her creation decided to slice the 182.9-metre boat in half and add 12 metres to the middle. It’s a staggeringly bold solution (designed to increase buoyancy), but one that’s characteristic of this project.
