Inspirational Maidens Every once in a while, a story comes across my desk which introduces a little wobble to the axis of my being. Stories that affect me not only because they are intriguing, considered and beautifully-written, but also because they carry important, powerful messages that force me to think about issues that lie beyond my standard frame of reference. Kia Koropp’s story in this issue – Maidens for Dinner – is such a story, and I urge you to read it. It deals with a circumnavigation of a refurbished race-yacht – itself something of a legend in the annals of round-the-world racing – crewed by a group of women. The Hauraki Gulf’s largest ferry company has launched a review of its operations aimed at improving its service. Fullers360 carries more than five million commuters and visitors every year around the Hauraki Gulf. “Overall,” says CEO Mike Horne, “our customers tell us we’re doing a good job. But we’ve heard loud and strong that some of our customers are unhappy with our services and this really concerns us. We realise we could listen better, and we are committed to doing that.” A review of the company’s operations is looking at current staffing levels, scheduling, talking with crews and prioritising better customer communication on the wharves – all of which underpin maintaining stringent safety procedures. One of New Zealand’s most prolific boat designers and builders – Bob Salthouse – died in June aged 83. He had been in poor health for some time. Though the exact number is unclear, it’s estimated that in a career spanning more than half a century Bob designed over 750 boats – and impressively – most are still afloat. They covered the entire spectrum of vessels – yachts, launches, wooden boats, workboats charter boats and luxury pleasure boats. They include the 32m alloy superyacht Pacific Mermaid and some of the most successful production designs New Zealand has seen – the Cavalier 32 and 39, both launched in the 1970s. The foundation grew organically out of an unexpected phone call in 2014 from a marina manager in the Seychelles, informing Edwards that Maiden was about to be dragged out of the marina and scuttled. Having been through five owners after Edwards’ ownership, the boat was eventually left abandoned in the Seychelles. At the time of the phone call Edwards was at a crossroads and was looking for a new project to take on. “At that stage I had no plan for her,” she recalls. “Maiden is part of maritime history and I thought perhaps I could do her up and give her to the maritime museum. When Grand Banks acquired Palm Beach in 2014, one of the big benefits was access to much larger facilities, and an enormous team of boat builders. There are now 600 staff members in Malaysia and 700 worldwide. This has increased production, boosted turnover and provided a larger R&D pool to improve the boats. This includes using infused carbon fibre, fine-tuning engineering to increase efficiency and access to state-of-the-art eight-axis robotic CNC equipment to quickly develop new models. “Grand Banks has been building boats for about 60 years so what we’ve done is just made some changes to the techniques and some of the culture,” says Richards. Auckland yachtie Matthew O’Donoghue is a relatively recent convert to lithium-ion – having equipped his Roberts 53 ketch Defiant with the battery technology two year ago. He reckons it’s the best present he’s ever given the boat, though it took a while before the penny dropped. He initially fitted four 250 Ah Toyama hybrid batteries in 2005, as well as a 200-amp alternator to the main engine, and a 200-amp 230VAC battery charger, which could be driven off the 12kVA genset. He would only let the batteries run down to 75% before recharging to give them a reasonable life. The 230V refrigeration system took the bulk of the energy onboard while he was cruising the Pacific. Built in 1933, the restored little launch is impressive in many ways – the craftsmanship, the authenticity of her fittings, the attention to detail. But the most intriguing part of her story is her new interior – it’s based almost entirely on informed guesswork. She belongs to Aucklander Peter Mence – a passionate classic boat enthusiast and no stranger to long, detailed restoration projects. Foodstuffs North Island has launched a new pilot programme to stop waste flowing to the sea. Launched on World Oceans Day (8 June), the programme is a significant investment in rubbish traps for store-based stormwater drains. Eleven New World and PAK’nSAVE stores are installing 125 LittaTrap™ catchers from New Zealand company Stormwater360 – a move to stop toxic waste and plastic flowing through drains to waterways. Mike Sammons, Sustainability Manager for Foodstuffs, says recent trials with single traps at New World Browns Bay and New World New Lynn in Auckland have demonstrated the efficacy of the system. “We captured everything from organic leaf matter and cigarette butts to soft plastics, polystyrene beads and straws. Classic boat icon Robert Brooke has been awarded Life Membership of the Classic Yacht Association. Brooke – a qualified boatbuilder – served his apprenticeship with Percy Vos. He has restored and built numerous traditional wooden boats and is known as a Logan restoration specialist. He has also played a major role in education, pioneering the integration of the ‘Design-and-Build’ mode of teaching and learning into the national curriculum of Workshop Technology. Where students previously copied existing designs or components, under Design-and-Build they conceive the design and see it through to completion. This principle has become the mainstay of technology education and is flourishing under the NCEA environment. The Outboard Boating Club (OBC) – the country’s largest recreational boating club – has added its support to a proposal aimed at protecting at least 20% of the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park, a move which will hopefully reverse dwindling fish numbers. The proposal comes from the Hauraki Gulf Forum, a statutory body which promotes and facilitates integrated management and the protection and enhancement of the Hauraki Gulf. It’s aimed at seeking protection of at least 20% of the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park and establishing restoration efforts for 1000km2 of shellfish beds and reefs. “As regular users of the gulf,” says OBC Commodore Bill Berry, “our 2000 members are well aware that the health of the Gulf is at risk and that more must be done to protect the environment of…

Kiwi fishing personalities and multiple IGFA world record holders, husband and wife team Scott and Sue Tindale, are behind a new fish tagging programme that is gaining momentum around New Zealand. They have the support of a range of organisations, sponsors and volunteers without whom the programme would not be possible. The Tindales have a long history of fish tagging, having assisted in numerous research projects by leading fisheries scientists like Dr Clinton Duffy and others. Tagging as a tool to track seasonal movements, preferred habitat and growth rates of marine species has been used successfully in over 100 countries around the world. Game-fishers in New Zealand are already familiar with tagging marlin, kingfish, tuna and sharks, but an angler-driven tagging programme for common inshore fish species is new. Apart…

When the time comes to give her a new look you are now spoiled for choice. Not only are paint coatings better than ever before, there are also more non-paint options. Stick-on coatings like vinyl wrap are cheaper, easier and quicker than paint, and with the ability to print patterns onto these you have more colour scheme options than any single-tint coating can offer. Exotic colours like metallic tints are also readily available in vinyl, whereas these are only available in very high-end automotive baked enamel paints which usually cannot be applied to a boat. In the June issue I left plucky Pastime at the end of 1894, wilting under a serious challenge from Mascotte, James Sinclair’s brilliant new 53ft cutter. There are four main threads to the story; the yacht’s amazing competition history and her survival; the connections of the present owners to her; the manner in which she is being restored; and finally, the deep roots Craig Wild has into the fabric of New Zealand’s yachting history. To continue Pastime’s competition history, the 1895 Lyttelton Regatta resulted in another win for Mascotte with Collins’ first Kia Ora second and R.J. Scott’s Zephyr third. L&B CEO Mark Milburn concedes that Spinlock’s product range is something of a shift away from L&B’s traditional inventory of marine gear, but points out that the company has always aligned itself with ‘quality’ suppliers, and that this development is a ‘logical progression’ given that L&B already carries Spinlock’s Ocean Signal personal locator beacons. “For us, a major component of Spinlock’s equipment is its range of lifejackets. These lifejackets have an excellent reputation in the market for their innovation and safety features. The navy hull of the Palm Beach 65, low-slung with sheer down to the tumblehome near the elegant transom, looked understated yet distinctive amid the towering box-like fibreglass boats around it. While Haddock’s uncles were involved with the sea, his father Herbert and mother Rose Edith became Waikato farmers and it was here Haddock was born in 1928. There was no question about staying on the farm: “From as long as I can remember, all I wanted to do was go to sea.” But this wasn’t easy in the closing stages of WWII. Aged 16, he eventually managed to secure a ‘boy’ position aboard the Northern Steamship Company’s coaster Kapiti. He later graduated to the Port Line’s Port Halifax and Port Fremantle, in which he voyaged between New Zealand and the UK. As an aside, the Port Line was originally named the Commonwealth and Dominion Line and eventually became part of the well-known Cunard line. In 1955 he met his future…

Poets that sail are surprisingly rare. New Zealand poets that sail are even rarer still. That is until Denis Glover hove over the horizon with a printing press and a head full of verse. In the literary world, Denis Glover is most famous for founding the Caxton Press. With business partner John Drew and typographer Leo Bensemann, they published the likes of R. A. K. Mason, Allen Curnow, Charles Brasch and Frank Sargeson. While Glover would never admit it himself, he was the equal of these poets/writers and together they became some of the founding authors of New Zealand’s distinct literary voice.
