New Zealand’s oldest sporting event and an iconic fixture on the City of Sails’ calendar has secured a new naming rights sponsor for its 184th edition on Monday 29 January, 2024. The Oceanbridge Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta will be the event’s official new title. This boat show first started in 1977 in Cannes on the French Riviera. This year’s show was held between 12-17 September 2023, had over 540 boats on display, and included 30 world premieres for visitors to view and sea-trial. Set across two quays, Vieux Port and Port Canto, connected by a free ferry service for visitors to the show, the festival is right in the centre of Cannes, near Nice, on the French Mediterranean coast. We chose to stay in Nice and used the very efficient train service to and from Cannes – the quays are only an eight-minute walk from the train station. Patterson, born in 1959, grew up in Howick, and with the sparkling waters of the Waitemata beckoning, the lure of boating proved irresistible. He built his first boat, a John Spencer Mustang, when he was 16 and still at school. “The Mustang’s like a small Flying Dutchman. They’re much more stable than a Cherub and gorgeous to sail.” Patterson’s uncle, John Porter, was a boatbuilder who’d served his time with Percy Vos, which inspired Patterson to take up an apprenticeship with boatbuilder Kerry Lilley in 1977. In 1954 the late Owen Woolley had obtained the necessary licence to build a boatshed and slipway on the edge of the Panmure River just upstream of the old Panmure bridge. Diomede was launched in 1919, too late to take part in World War I. She spent the inter-war years on the China Station then served from 1925 to 1935 in New Zealand as a training ship alongside HMS Dunedin to replace HMS Chatham which had been with the New Zealand Division since 1921. Diomede rendered assistance to Napier after the massive 1931 Hawkes Bay earthquake. Diomede’s crew were part of the force of bluejackets sent over immediately from HMS Philomel to help the Police quell the riot in Queen Street, the smashing of nearly every shop window and the looting on the night of April 14, 1932 which followed a demonstration by 15,000 unemployed people marching to the Town Hall. In the 41 years of PIC Coastal Classic history there are always many winners – but overall line and handicap winners in each of the monohull and keelboat fleets stand out. This year, line honours went to the TP52 Wired, owned by Rob Bassett and representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. Wired crossed the finish line at 1947hrs. In a keelboat fleet of more than 123 boats of all shapes and sizes, a win on PHRF handicap is an equivalently prestigious and sought after honour. A year or so ago the couple bought a Bayliner 2556 through Vining Marine in Picton. Replacing the boat’s dated and tired interior became a project they thoroughly enjoyed and their association with Vining led Kevin and Sarah to take on a role brokering boats for the company in Christchurch part time, working out of Lyttelton’s Te Ana Marina. In May this year, while also wearing Vining Marine T-shirts, they opened their first Test Tag electrical testing pop-up at the marina. I’ll be in trouble if I continue writing this, for the good folk of Stillwater Boating Club don’t necessarily want their secret out. But I’ll do it anyway. The Fairway Bay Marina expansion, managed and constructed by Bellingham Marine, faced several obstacles. One of the most significant was the task of removing old piles from limestone bedrock and placing new piles into the marina floor, which consisted of a solid base akin to low-strength concrete. Fairway Bay Marina undertook the marina expansion project that commenced work in June 2022 and successfully concluded on schedule in December last year. This expansion aimed to elevate the marina’s facilities and address the increasing demand for berths, especially within the larger 20 and 18-metre catamaran market. When Daniel Painter from Auckland-based dealer Your Marine assured us that the boat would be “interesting,” I put it down to mere marketing hyperbole. After all, how different could a 27-foot, outboard-powered cabin boat weighing approximately 2.7 tonnes and with a beam of 8.5 feet (2.59m), truly be? Now in its 45th year, the festival features hundreds of Thames traditional craft and thousands of visitors, including many from abroad. The website describes it as “celebrating the best in British boatbuilding and craftsmanship, evoking the nostalgia of boating from a bygone era”. What constitutes a traditional boat? It must be built of timber, or riveted steel (not welded), or canvas. Plywood boats also qualify, providing the hull is planked clinker (overlapping planks). There were hundreds such boats: skiffs, gigs, punts, launches and a type of craft traditionally linked to the Thames – ‘slipper stern’ launches. Slipper stern launches have a unique characteristic: their sloping stern. Competitors are being urged to get their entry in early for the 2024 Bay of Islands Sailing Week regatta, with a fantastic prize up for grabs for those who do, and additional late entry fees for those who don’t. Entry fees are the same this year as last year. Early birds who sign up and pay their regatta entry fee by 31st December will go in the draw to win a Gill Offshore sailing jacket from Burnsco in Opua. However, skippers late to the start line and those who don’t enter in time will be hit with a $100 late entry fee. World number seven, Nick Egnot-Johnson (NZL), and his Knots Racing crew of Chris Main, Zak Merton and Peter Soosalu emerged victorious to secure the National Match Racing Champion’s title after a thrilling final against Cole Tapper (AUS) and his CYCA Youth Sailing Academy team. Egnot-Johnson won the best-of-five series final 3-2, with Tapper showing a strong dominance, winning the first race and not conceding defeat until the fifth and final race where he came off second-best in a tacking battle on the start line. The Lighthouse 2023 New Zealand Match Racing Championships, from October 26th to October 28th, was hosted by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (RNZYS) and saw six teams sail three round-robins in stage one over Thursday and Friday before progressing into the final stages on Saturday.…

The Bill Upfold-designed, Elite 18-metre Mid Pilothouse was built by the team at Lloyd Stevenson Boatbuilders, and the loving care and attention that has gone into every detail is clearly evident. Zaphira’s hull started out life as a spec boat in those distant days before covid, but her current owners came on board quite early in the build process, and were able to put their stamp on the interior and the overall finished product. The efficient hull with its Upfold-signature silent chines is based on other earlier 18-metre Elites, but the detailing and styling is custom-designed and built to the owners’ specifications. New sailors Jackie and Jerome Hoitinck are sailing the world aboard Lonna, a newly-built hybrid sailing cat. While sailing at night near Brazil, they witnessed a fishing boat capsize. As Johnny-on-the-Spot, they had to make a MAYDAY distress call, but no one responded. Jackie tells their story. I was sleeping in the cabin when I heard Jerome yelling: “Jackie, come now! For very occasional use, a bucket is the cheapest option, and Burnsco sells a toilet bucket with a suitably shaped seat. The next step up is a chemical toilet, and there is a range of those with removable ‘cassettes’ that make them easier to empty. But there is nothing like the convenience of a proper flush toilet. Flush tiolets start at just over $300 for a manual flush with a hand pump and around $450 for the most basic electric flush model.
