Sikh Cub Scouts in first through third grades can earn the Nirbhau emblem. Cub Scouts learn about the basic concepts of the Sikh faith. Webelos and Arrow of Light Scouts in fourth and fifth grades can earn the Nirvair emblem. They learn about the overview of the Sikh faith. Every winter, thousands of graceful creatures — mistaken for mythical mermaids many years ago — glide below the surface in Florida’s rivers and waterways. And you can swim alongside them, like Troop 9005 of Jacksonville, Fla., did last February. During colder months, manatees slowly paddle into the warmer waters found in Florida’s natural springs. Tour guides can take you to locations where manatees gather, but you must follow certain rules. Rescue Efforts Troop 9005 had visited manatees before, booking a tour boat that took the Scouts to places where they could snorkel alongside the animals. They loved it and wanted to go again. Some of their assistance might come from four-legged friends. Service animals can help people who are blind get around safely and can alert people who are deaf of important sounds. They assist in everyday tasks, like opening doors or retrieving needed objects. Animals can also be trained for people with diabetes, epilepsy or post-traumatic stress disorder to alert or comfort them when a medical emergency arises. WHAT’S IT LIKE PREPARING MEALS FOR 2,200 ANIMALS across 400 species, everything from tiny ruby-throated hummingbirds to 4-ton Asian elephants? Mike Maslanka will tell you that his day starts early. Around 5:30 a.m., before his staff arrives, he walks through the 23,000-square-foot kitchen that is at the heart of his job to make sure everything is ready. Over the next few hours, his crew will prep food for every animal at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute in Washington, D.C.
