When a couple in their 30s with a one-year-old daughter purchased a small 1970s brick veneer home on stumps, they felt there was only one choice: knock it down and rebuild something amazing. The duo wanted a home with the luxury and feel of a resort-style five-star Dubai hotel, which they achieved through such fine details as lighting, large windows and architectural open space. Known for its historic bathing boxes and white-sand beach, Edithvale has long attracted people eager to live the leisurely coastal lifestyle. The charming coastal town of Flinders on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula holds many treasures — one is this architect-designed pavilion–style holiday home. From the drawing board of Alishia Minett-Johnson, founder of Minett Studio Architecture & Design, the home responds to the owners’ desire for an abode that would feel comfortable in scale when they were home alone yet easily “open up” to accommodate guests with no loss of privacy. “Although the site itself didn’t capture any views, we decided to prioritise the courtyard and provide key landscape connections with a breezeway and a private garden sanctuary to the master ensuite,” explains Alishia. “Connections were important, linking the exterior to interior spaces and each pavilion with the next. Where once stood an old weatherboard house, now proudly stands Samurai Duplex — a testament to the owners’ passion for Japanese culture and architecture, and a compelling example of how an architect-designed duplex can add character to a neighbourhood.
