Having lost her beloved mum to cancer a couple of years ago, Jewel Gould decided to channel those painful emotions into something positive. She started a brand that encouraged mums to take better care of themselves. The company flourished. How was Obeah portrayed? In the late 1700s and early 1800s, British stories that featured Obeah in their plots often fictionalised slave rebellions. They gave white men the leading roles – heroically conquering the rebels and saving the white woman in distress. Obeah was understood as something that made rebels feel they were invulnerable. Early writers were frightened of the power of Obeah and demonised it, but, after emancipation, the tenor of the stories changed and they became more imperialistic and contemptuous in tone.…
