In all, R16 953 233 worth of abalone, R1 563 650 of illicit cigarettes and liquor, R8 488 390 of dagga; R7 218 900 of mandrax, R5 000 of cocaine and illegal goods, and R23 175 of methamphetamine (tik) was confiscated. This is according to their families and activists who marched to the provincial police’s headquarters in Green Point yesterday to express their concerns. They were worried about becoming targets for criminals should they return to normal housing, they said. Police and the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure have apparently imposed rent increases of up to 1 000% on officers living in this accommodation, Luyanda Mtamzeli, a community organiser at Ndifuna Ukwazi, said. Staff reporter LONG-distance runner and extreme athlete Karoline Hanks has completed the gruelling 13 Peaks trail run challenge, not once, but twice, as a fund-raising initiative for the Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation’s Turtle Rehabilitation Programme. By finishing the gruelling 212km distance in 71 hours 16 minutes, Hanks became the first person to complete the trail back to back. She has already raised nearly R40 000, but aims to raise a total of R70 000, with the fund-raiser continuing until January 2022. A Noordhoek resident, Hanks, 50, is well known in the Cape Town running community as an endurance runner, as well as a conservationist and environmental campaigner focusing on single-use plastics. staff reporter PATIENTS in the metro, used to standing in long queues to collect their chronic medication, can now use an e-locker. The Collect & Go e-lockers are medicine dispensing units which will allow patients to collect their monthly medicine. The e-lockers have been launched as a pilot project at 11 health-care facilities. They are fitted with air-conditioning units with remote temperature monitors for optimal storage conditions. E-lockers project manager Gillian Makota said: “The e-locker consists of a console unit with pigeonholes (like a Post Office box) to load and unload medicine parcels. Patients receive an SMS notification with a one-time PIN to collect medicine at the patient collecting unit (e-locker). The members marched to Parliament yesterday, demanding justice for victims of femicide and their families. They demanded that Parliament implement legislation that would compel judges to hand down judgments that were tailored for femicide offenders. DPM president Puleng Mpokotho said the killing of women and girls was five times higher in South Africa than anywhere else in the world, with one woman killed every three hours. The number of journalists jailed around the world hit a new record in 2021, the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists said yesterday. In its annual report, the CPJ listed 50 journalists imprisoned in China, 26 in Burma, 25 in Egypt, 23 in Vietnam and 19 in Belarus. Adding those jailed in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Turkey, Russia, Ethiopia and Eritrea, the CPJ said a total of 293 journalists were in prison worldwide as of December 1 – up from 280 the year before.
