Mthuthuzeli Ntseku mthuthuzeli.ntseku@inl.co.za AS ITS last project for the year, non-profit organisation Hashtag SA Unite, in collaboration with other organisations and volunteers, aims to feed 2 000 homeless people on New Year’s Eve. As the pandemic further exacerbates poverty and with more people finding themselves homeless, the organisations said the festive season was the appropriate time to give back to the needy and vulnerable. Hashtag SA Unite co-founder Ashley Rix said it fed between 650 and 1 000 people daily from January to November but has not done so on a New Year's Eve. Rix said the initiative was designed as part of their thanksgiving for a successful year. We must honour his legacy of speaking truth to power and his life by continuing the fight against apartheid Israel, occupation of Palestine, against politicians who abused their power, poverty, unemployment, corruption, oppression, injustices, human rights abuses and immorality. South Africans must strengthen and live by his famous phrase “rainbow nation” – a dream of Tutu to see South Africans of various cultural, racial, religious or ethnic groups in their different cultures and skin colours, co-exist in peace, unity and side by side. As an Anglican, I feel the passing of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Mpilo Tutu in a very particularised and personal way. As a family man, I extended my deepest condolences to the Tutu family at their sad loss. As a member of the Cape Argus group, I join heartily in the homage paid to the memory of The Arch. As a South African, I join this nation, which he labelled “Rainbow”, in pausing from my daily mundanities for this week, in order to ponder at 12, when the bells toll, the deep footprints he left in our lives. Chulumanco Mahamba chulumanco.mahamba@inl.co.za NUMEROUS boating accidents this festive season prompted the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) to appeal to boaters and paddlers to use its emergency app, which allows operations teams to track and monitor people out at sea. The app allows NSRI emergency operations centre (EOC) duty controllers to follow boaters and paddlers’ movements on a computer screen. “When you face an emergency, pressing a button on the app tells the NSRI and the maritime rescue co-ordination centre (MRCC) that you have an emergency situation, and gives us your exact position. “Rescue resources are dispatched directly to that position,” the NSRI said. Two-year-old Uthmaan Taliep was reportedly playing with a bicycle at his neighbour’s yard when unknown suspects opened fire at a house in Sonata Way and he was shot in the face. Police spokesperson Frederick van Wyk confirmed that the motive for the shooting was suspected to be gang-related. “According to reports, Belhar police received a complaint from radio control. At the scene, they were informed that the victim had already been taken to the fire station for medical attention. He was declared deceased by ambulance personnel,” he said. Mandela’s jailer plans to put it on auction Mwangi Githahu mwangi.githahu@inl.co.za THE Ex-Political Prisoners’ Association (Eppa) has warned it would lodge a formal complaint against Nelson Mandela’s jailer, Christo Brand, after reports that he is auctioning the key to Madiba’s Robben Island prison cell. Last week, British newspaper, the Daily Mail, published a story in which it said the key was set to fetch millions of rand at the January 28 auction by US auction house Guernsey’s. The key is the headline item at the auction. Guernsey’s said on its website that the key would be included with one of the former president’s iconic Madiba shirts, a signed copy of the South African constitution, and other gifts given to Mandela by Harvard University and the Obamas. My letter which he referred to pointed out the blatant lie that resulted when a majority of UN members through their voting deemed Israel as having no historical connection to the Temple Mount. His statement that “the 129 states voted in favour of humanity towards the Palestinian dream” was not what the vote was about. The US and Russia will hold much- anticipated talks in January, a White House official said, with the two countries due to negotiate on nuclear arms control and mounting tensions over Ukraine. “The US looks forward to engaging with Russia,” a spokesperson for the National Security Council said on condition of anonymity. “When we sit down to talk, Russia can put its concerns on the table and we will put our concerns on the table with Russia’s activities as well.” Bilateral talks are scheduled for January 10, the spokesperson said. According to Debt Rescue’s latest Quarterly Survey which polled over 1 200 South Africans, this was due to the festive season frenzy, which saw many buying presents – and often on credit (60%). Neil Roets, CEO of Debt Rescue, said: “This is a worrying signal, especially as 75% of South Africans’ income goes towards servicing debt and almost 40% of credit-active consumers have impaired credit records.” Roets said all of this was set against the backdrop of rising electricity, fuel and food prices as well as a higher interest rate, while unemployment is at an all-time high. THE past week I reread Bill Bryson’s 1995 best-seller Notes from a small island. I did not laugh as much as when I first read it. Google was launched three years after he published his book, and his tales about pouring over maps and bus timetables to plot his routes stirred bouts of nostalgia within me. The nostalgia wasn’t about the maps and timetables. It was about how certain things – buses and houses – were part of normal society. In South Africa, we had just embarked on a period of mass transition. Homes were filled with baked beans, bully beef and fuel supplies.
