A UN study has found that 222 million children and adolescents worldwide have had their education disrupted by multiple crises that have rocked various parts of the world in the past six years. The study was produced by Education Cannot Wait (ECW), the UN global fund for education in emergencies and protracted crises. FOUR suspects arrested for the kidnap of city businessman Ismail Rajah, 69, appeared in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Friday. Elijah Silinga, 27, Thamsanqa Mvimjelwa, 34, Amosse Manyisa, 25, and Julio Langa, 37, have been charged with two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances and kidnapping, while Manyisa and Langa have also been charged for being in the country illegally. An instant loans company that was caught on the wrong side of the law following a 2018 sting operation has lost a court battle against the National Credit Regulator (NCR) to nullify the investigation over tactics used in the probe. The Supreme Court of Appeal found that the NCR was well within its rights to launch an investigation into Dacqup Finances on the reasonable suspicion that it was violating the National Credit Act (NCA). The court heard that in 2018, during a scouting exercise, an NCR inspector noticed a signboard outside Dacqup’s premises advertising instant loans. TWO sisters believed to be from Ceres were found dead, their bodies floating in water near the Old Harbour in Hermanus. The Hermanus National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said it made the discovery shortly after 3pm yesterday after numerous calls from witnesses. The SCA endorsed an appeal by Sars, lodged against the order and judgment of the majority of the full court of the Western Cape High Court, which had upheld an appeal by Van der Merwe against a judgment of the Cape Town Tax Court. Theewaterskloof Municipality in conjunction with humanitarian-aid organisation Gift of the Givers (GOTG) has initiated relief efforts in the Waterworks informal settlement in Grabouw following a devastating fire that broke out at a fruit juice company. The incident at the weekend left nearly 200 people destitute after the blaze ravaged Elgin Fruit Juices and spread to Gaffley’s Transport Services before jumping across the road into the informal settlement area next to the Grabouw water treatment works. A bus from Gaffley’s, one private vehicle, three formal houses and 66 informal structures were destroyed in the blaze. With the police yet to finalise their investigations into the tragedy at the Enyobeni Tavern in Scenery Park, East London, Buffalo City spokesperson Samkelo Ngwenya said a preliminary investigation showed the establishment was operating illegally and in contravention of municipal by-laws. A total of 21 teenagers died in the incident, which left the country stunned. The exact cause of the youngsters’ deaths is not yet known. Women for Change Programme has seen 13 unemployed women receive certificates for field work done in ward 60 communities over the past four months. Councillor for ward 60 Mark Kleinschmidt, Social Development and Early Childhood Development Centres professional officer Christene Simetu and Supervisor Anthea Steed were on hand to certify the women at the graduation awards.
