Victoria Hospital has added a Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC) – considered a one-stop facility for survivors of sexual assault, gender-based violence and domestic violence – to reduce secondary victimisation and to assist victims in building a strong case for a successful prosecution. The 24/7 centre was opened at the hospital in Wynberg yesterday, the seventh at a hospital in the province and 61st in the country. TCCs are led by the National Prosecuting Authority’s Sexual Offences and Community Affairs Unit and incorporate the Health and Wellness Department, Social Development Department, SAPS and non-governmental organisations. National Director of Public Prosecutions, Shamila Batohi, said over the past 12 years, in TCC reported and prosecuted matters, the conviction rate for sexual offences had increased from 60% in 2010 to 76% in 2022. A scuffle broke out during a press briefing addressed by recently suspended Cope president Mosiuoa “Terror” Lekota. Lekota held the briefing yesterday in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni, in response to party members who on Tuesday announced that he was suspended with immediate effect. Among the reasons given by the Congress National Committee was that Lekota was dividing the party and lacked energy because of his weak health. It was believed that Lekota wanted to announce the suspension of those who suspended him. A number of unidentified men wearing Cope T-shirts stormed into the briefing and a brawl ensued. This week we showcase one of the oldest choirs participating in the upcoming Cape Malay Choir Board (CMCB) competition – Angeliere Sing Koor. The choir was established in 1952 in Orphan Street, Cape Town, a part of the central city adjacent to the Bo-Kaap area, by siblings Ebrahim, Salie and Mogamat Saal, with Boeta Cassiem Canfield and the brothers Boeta Boy and Ismail van der Schyff breaking away from the then family choir, Jonge Sentrale SK. Members of a law enforcement base in Mitchells Plain were left traumatised after a 32-year-old law officer twice pulled the trigger on himself, committing suicide on Tuesday morning. Another officer, who spoke to Cape Argus sister paper the Daily Voice after the incident, said the officer shot himself “at least twice” in the head at the Beacon Valley base before he was rushed to hospital. The increased incidence of pipe bursts and leaks in the Cape and South Africa was highlighted at World Water Week in Stockholm, Sweden, this week, where Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu called for private sector collaborations to address water security and wastewater treatment. Provincial ANC Finance and Economic Opportunities spokesperson Nomi Nkondlo has demanded that Pick n Pay and the provincial Department of Economic Development and Tourism (Dedat) account to the legislature about the public funds spent on the retailer’s township economy project. Nkondlo said the Pick n Pay Market Store project, which started in 2017 and ran until 2021, had left many small, medium and micro-enterprises (SMMEs) in debt to the tune of millions of rand. The EFF in Gauteng is mobilising its members to “defend” the Kalafong Provincial Tertiary Hospital in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria, where members of Operation Dudula have been vetting patients arriving at the facility and blocking foreigners from getting health care. EFF’s acting Gauteng provincial chairperson Itani Edwin Mukwevho questioned why police had not arrested or dispersed Dudula members, despite an interdict obtained against the people blocking the hospital entrance and vetting patients. The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) said they had noted the arrest of former Transnet officials, including the former chief executive Brian Molefe and former chief financial officer Anoj Singh. Satawu said Molefe and his co- accused were facing serious charges of money laundering, corruption and fraud. The stoning of the City’s Dial-a-Ride vehicle with a vulnerable passenger on board has led to the suspension of the service in Nyanga until further notice. Nyanga Dial-a-Ride (DAR) users were stranded yesterday after the back windscreen of the vehicle was damaged. DAR is an essential service for commuters with special needs who cannot make use of conventional transport. The City said it would use its service provider to inform users once it was safe to operate in this area. Public toilets in the Cape Town CBD are few and far between and are only open during normal working hours. In fact, the City only has four ablution blocks in the area. These can be found on Greenmarket Square, Thibault Square, Riebeeck Street and the Grand Parade. The Housing Development Agency said it had yet to consult with the Mitchells Plain community regarding the relocation of 1 254 residents illegally dwelling on Prasa’s Central Line to 8.7 hectares of land in a wedge area by November 30. The agency said that such a consultation process must be preceded by approvals as per Section 68 of the City’s Planning by-laws, which it said it had not been granted.
