The Playhouse Company in Durban is ready to host another exciting arts festival that will see a number of community arts groups take centre stage. In its fourth year, the annual Community Arts Festival is set to take place over two weekends this month. 17 endangered penguins died The owner of two husky dogs in Simon’s Town has been charged after the Cape of Good Hope SPCA and the City’s Law Enforcement Animal Control Unit removed and impounded the dogs after they killed 17 endangered African penguins on Seaforth Beach over the weekend. THE four men accused of terrorising the Uitsig community as part of the “Ama Don’t Care” gang, and of killing 4-year-old Likeshia Joubert in Uitsig in March 2019, have been convicted in the Western Cape High Court. Dawnay Davids, 19, and family members Mahlubandile Jacobs, 25, and Vincent Davids, 31, were on trial alongside Moegamat Swarts, 23, for their alleged involvement in the murder of Likeshia, her grandfather, Christopher Cornelius, 46, on March 26, 2019, and the subsequent murder of Glenda Ruiters, 56, on April 7, 2019, who the State alleged was killed because she was a witness. A group of prospective neuropsychology interns have turned to crowdfunding in anticipation of a year-long prerequisite unpaid internship. The seven students have so far raised a mere R700 from two donors since its crowdfunding page went live on September 13, with an ambitious target of R840 000. Neuropsychology graduates are required to do the clinical internship in order to qualify as a registered neuropsychologist, recognised by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). The October 2022 Household Affordability Index, which tracks food price data from 44 supermarkets and 30 butcheries, in Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town, Pietermaritzburg and Springbok (in Northern Cape), shows the average cost of the household food basket for the last month was R4 787.83. Month-on-month, the data released by the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity group shows the average cost decreased by R18.03 (0.4%), from R4 805.86 in September to R4 787.83 in October. Year-on-year, however, the average cost of the food basket rose by R470.28 (10.9%), from R4 317.56 in October 2021 to R4 787.83 in October 2022. The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate is calling on Nyanga and neighbouring communities’ residents to join its officials at an open day to discuss plans for the Nyanga Public Transport Interchange (PTI). Urban mobility Mayco member Rob Quintas made the call yesterday, saying residents needed to attend the open day as the City intends to inform the local communities of exactly how it plans to tackle the project and improve the overall commuting experience. The Nyanga PTI open day will take place on November 9 at the Zolani Recreation Centre, corner of Sithandatu Avenue and Ntlangano Crescent, Nyanga East, from 2pm until 7pm. Groote Schuur Hospital has become the first public sector hospital in the province to have its own Wellness Centre for staff. The centre, which opened on Tuesday, aims to facilitate a holistic approach to wellness and includes a gym, yoga studio, meditation room, arts and craft room, massage chair room and training rooms. Services will be available to the hospital’s 4 500 staff members during office hours. At the opening, staff came out to visit exhibitors promoting the six aspects of wellness: occupational, physical, environmental, social, spiritual and intellectual wellness. THE police’s top brass are refusing to comment on a report into the killing of Cape Town top cop Charl Kinnear, which implicates a number of past and serving police officers from the rank of warrant officer all the way up to general. Written by an Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) task team, the report, which has been seen by Independent Media, confirmed the findings of the preliminary report and has evidence that all SAPS members mentioned “undeniably committed acts of misconduct and some committed criminal offences”. Eight men who handed themselves over to the Hawks yesterday appeared in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court for their alleged links to an international drug smuggling cartel that shipped cocaine between Brazil and South Africa. Suspended Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has accused “hostile” committee members, the media and Parliament’s legal adviser of being wrong about her legal representatives withdrawing from the inquiry into her fitness to hold office. A delegation of members of Parliament took part in a clean-up mission at the Bokmakierie Canal in Hazendal along Jan Smuts Drive to raise awareness of the negative effect of single-use plastics on the environment. The clean-up was an initiative of the voluntary South African Legislators for the Environment (Sale) forum which comprised members of the Portfolio Committee on Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment and followed a fact-finding mission to Kenya earlier this year. During the visit Sale assessed Kenya’s success in addressing plastic pollution through its ban on single-use plastic bags, as well as the potential to develop legislation in South Africa to help reduce plastic waste polluting the natural environment. With the impending summer season and the rush to the popular Strandfontein pavilion, members of the seaside community have raised concerns about the City’s long-anticipated refurbishment of the deteriorated Fisherman’s Lane precinct at Strandfontein Pavilion, often referred to as the “broken road”.
