The extensive and multi-organisational search for French solo sailor Emmanuel Dailler, who was sailing on a white yacht, has ended after information was received that he arrived safely at his destination, Martinique Island in the French Caribbean. In the early hours of yesterday morning, Dailler was able to contact his wife and family to inform them that he had arrived safely in Martinique. He had last been heard from when he departed from Hout Bay Yacht Club on March 2 for his long voyage. Mexico City: A top Mexican immigration official has been charged over the deaths of 40 migrants in a fire at a detention centre last month. Salvador Gonzalez Guerrero, head of the National Institute of Migration in Chihuahua, was charged with murder, injury and unlawful exercise of public service. The magistrate ordered that Gonzalez Guerrero be remanded in custody. TEHRAN: Iranian deputy oil minister Jalil Salari said nearly 10 million litres of diesel is smuggled out of the Islamic republic per day due to its competitive price. Salari, who is also MD of the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company said on Saturday that the price of 1 litre of diesel in Iran was around 8 US cents cheaper than that of its surrounding countries. Two 7-year-old learners from Riebeeck Primary School in Belhar were injured when a gang fight spilled over onto their school grounds. The bullet grazed one learner’s ear; the other learner was shot in the leg. One of the two men involved in the shooting has been arrested and is due in court on attempted murder charges. Police spokesperson Malcolm Pojie said reports were that two men were chasing each other on to the school ground when one started shooting. For more than a year, I have watched the homeless situation in Plumstead with keen interest. Of particular concern is the situation at the top end of Gabriel Road, where the “break-up-and-remove-rebuild-and-return” strategy has been at work, with no permanent solution. I have seen the homeless occupy that land. I have watched the City of Cape Town’s law enforcement arrive over and over to confiscate the homeless’ assets that they deem to be rubbish, only to have the homeless re-occupy the land a few hours later. Convicted murderer and rapist Thabo Bester’s escape has shone the spotlight on how dysfunctional the South African prison system is. Despite the government’s inaction over the past 20 years to address corruption in these prisons, prompt action is now necessary to establish a sense of order in the circumstances. Thus, South Africa must look towards innovative prisons driven by fourth industrial revolution (4IR) technologies to bring change.
