Learner dies in Cata taxi accident

A Grade 5 learner from Rocklands Primary School died in a tragic accident that occurred at the corner of Marguerite Street and AZ Berman Drive in Lentegeur, Mitchells Plain, yesterday morning. Another police officer charged with corruption

Another police officer, Mthuthuzeli Qikila, has been arrested along with six other officers, following an investigation by the Anti-Corruption Unit. Court documents revealed that Thandile Damini, Alwabi Magazi and Mthuthuzeli Qikila have been charged at the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court over corruption. In an affidavit by Anti-Corruption Unit officer Yolande Baerts it was revealed the value of abalone amounted to R360 000, while the amount of cocaine allegedly found in their possession was 200g. They allegedly used a marked police vehicle and offered to assist a witness to illegally transport 200g of cocaine to ensure “he does not get arrested”. “The witness was legally in possession of the cocaine that has a street value of R200 000.” Court documents further indicate Qikila was only arrested on April 13.…

Sassa lost R536m to theft, corruption

The lifeline of the poor, the SA Social Security Agency (Sassa), has haemorrhaged more than R500 million to government officials’ theft, corruption and fraud in the past decade – with little to no accountability. In a parliamentary reply, Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu totalled the cost of theft, corruption, mismanagement, irregular payments, system outages, cyberattacks, system glitches and card duplication to R536 million since the 2012/13 financial year. The department has sanctioned 445 officials for wrongdoing, Zulu revealed. Zulu said no official accounted for the loss of R16.8 million for 2012/13. Sassa lost R109.9 million in 2013/14, with only two officials being fired for the loss. Dark day as Media24 shuts the daily ‘Son’

THE closure of a popular Cape Town daily tabloid comes as another heavy blow to the print media industry. The Son, an Afrikaans tabloid title in the Media24 newspaper stable, has been a colourful part of the Western Cape media landscape for about 20 years. The “skinner koerant” has been a daily staple for previously under-served coloured, working-class communities in Cape Town, as well as in dorpies in the Winelands, Overberg and West Coast. In its heyday, it was also published in the Eastern and Northern Cape. That was before the Covid-19 pandemic struck, wreaking permanent damage on the industry.
