Tsireledzo Ndou, the instructing attorney for convicted rapist and prison escapee Thabo Bester, reportedly faces criminal charges himself. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phaladi Shuping said there was a case of attempted rape and assault against Ndou which was postponed to June 21. Newzroom Afrika reported yesterday that the 27-year-old lawyer was out on R1 000 bail. More accusations have surfaced in the “racial” incident alleged to have taken place at an Afrikaans-medium school in Bronkhorstspruit after a rugby match that ended in a brawl. Last week, Hoërskool Erasmus was accused of instigating violence this month during a match against Zayo Academy, a Tshwane school which predominantly has black pupils. The brawl reportedly ensued during and after the match, which Zayo won, when parents ran on to the field to protest against the referee’s ruling against the Erasmus rugby team. Testimonies written by the victims of the alleged violence and submitted to Zayo Academy principal Catherine van Tonder, and seen by Pretoria News, state that white parents referred to them using the K-word. Five rehabilitated turtles have now been successfully released into De Hoop Nature Reserve – a marine protected area – as part of an ongoing release programme at the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation’s Turtle Conservation Centre. This comes just a few days ahead of World Sea Turtle Day tomorrow. The Two Oceans Aquarium’s Turtle Conservation Centre, Cape- Nature, the Morukuru Family De Hoop, and Morukuru Goodwill Foundation worked together to release two green turtles, Amigo and Zelena, at De Hoop on May 3, after they were rescued off the coast. The teams then returned on May 24 to release hawksbill turtles Siriti and Amber, and Coral (another green turtle). THE CITY has bowed to Forestry, Fisheries and Environment Minister Barbara Creecy’s ruling in favour of a repeat of the public participation process in the long-running matter of pumping raw sewage into the ocean on the Atlantic Seaboard. On Tuesday, Creecy decided on an appeal lodged by political parties and activists against the office of the chief director of integrated coastal management, which originally granted coastal water discharge permits to the City eight years ago. Creecy said the public participation process conducted by the City in applying for a permit to discharge sewage into the ocean at Camps Bay, Green Point and Hout Bay was “inadequate, outdated and should be redone”. CAPE Town has South Africa’s highest number of municipal corruption cases under investigation by the police, with four out of the 14 cases registered across the country in Cape Town. Of the 14 cases, five are in KwaZulu-Natal, one in Limpopo and eight in the Western Cape. Four of the 14 investigations are on the court roll, while the remaining 10 are under investigation. This was revealed during an update to Parliament’s portfolio committee on co-operative governance and traditional affairs by law enforcement agencies. The agencies had updates on corruption cases under investigation at municipalities. A couple from San Michel, Noordhoek, survived an attack in Philippi last week after they were lured into the area by online marketplace opportunists. The couple, who escaped after losing their valuables, said they were unaware that the area had been identified as a hot spot for crime. Retired social worker Donna da Silva, 60, and her husband Tony da Silva, 68, survived the attack after a man, whose name appeared to be Sinelethu on their WhatsApp conversations, lured them into the area as they showed interest in buying two heaters that were advertised for sale. SEVEN contracted lecturers at the College of Cape Town City Campus are fighting for the payment of their salaries which they have yet to receive since the start of the year. The lecturers are part of the college’s Amended Senior Certificate programme from October until June offered by the college. They had a contract from October until December and had been paid for those months, but were not issued a new contract in the new year. One of the affected lecturers, Trudy Rushin, said offer letters were sent only at the end of April and were incorrectly dated and were showing a 50% reduction in the hourly pay rate. A resident rescued a toddler who was snatched in front of her home. Two-year-old Limokuhle Nakanyane was playing with her 3-year-old cousin and 5-year-old neighbour in front of her home when a woman, approached the children. She picked up the victim and also took the neighbour’s child, but the girl managed to escape. Limokuhle spent two hours with the woman, who reportedly just walked around with the child. The SA Medical Association (Sama) says South Africa can not implement the National Health Insurance (NHI) when it is not able to secure more health-care workers. Sama chairperson Dr Mvuyisi Mzukwa said the country was producing enough doctors but the system was not absorbing the doctors. The government said the objective of the NHI Bill is to provide universal access to quality health care for all, as enshrined in the Constitution. It said NHI is a health financing system designed to pool funds to provide access to quality, affordable personal health services for all South Africans based on their health needs, irrespective of their socio-economic status.
