The SOUTH African National Taxi Council (Santaco) said law-enforcement officers acted like gangsters as they arrested operators blocking roads in the CBD. On Tuesday, while the City’s officers were conducting an operation and impounding vehicles, taxi drivers allegedly attacked an officer. Rubber bullets were fired and stun grenades were used. The police said 27 people were arrested for the riot. Police Minister Bheki Cele said they were gunning for drug kingpins as he launched Operation Shanela. Accompanied by National Commissioner of Police General Fannie Masemola and provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembesile Patekile, Cele first went to Bellville with the hope of raiding more shops, but they were closed after a raid in which counterfeit goods were seized. Operation Shanela consists of regular stop-and-searches, vehicle check points, roadblocks, cordon and searches, high visibility patrols including foot patrols, tracing of wanted suspects with a focus on the apprehension of murder and rape suspects, and inspections at taverns or shebeens. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said it would not be prosecuting ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula over money laundering allegations. “This is in relation to the Public Protector’s report released on December 19, 2019, that the NPA should look into the allegations that Sedgars Sports funded the Mbalula family holiday to Dubai between December 2016 and January 2017, when he was the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture,” said NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana. During the period December 2016 to January 2017, Mbalula and his family went to Dubai for a family holiday worth R680 000, for by Sedgars Sports. DESPITE recent rains that have resulted in Cape Town dams reaching levels last seen in 2014, municipal, provincial and national authorities continue to urge citizens to use water sparingly. The Western Cape Education Ministry has once again bemoaned the destruction and theft of infrastructure and valuable learning materials at local community schools over the recent winter school holidays. Education MEC David Maynier said despite the department facilitating the instruction of over 400 security officials at its schools over the June/July holidays, certain schools, unfortunately, fell victim to rampant vandalism.
