THIS Deaf Awareness Month, and after the landmark decision to include South African Sign Language (SASL) as the 12th official language, a silent walk was held at the weekend to bridge the gap between the hearing and the deaf. September is International Month for Deaf People, commemorating the first congress of the World Federation of the Deaf which took place in September 1951 in Rome, Italy. The Silent Walk 2023 was hosted by the Deaf Federation of South Africa (DeafSA). The Deaf awareness initiative, a seventh of its kind, is an annual one that takes place during Deaf Awareness Month. Another person, one of the victims rescued from the Johannesburg central district building which burnt last week, has died in hospital, the Gauteng Department of Health says. The patient died on Saturday. The death toll from the hijacked Usindiso Building has now increased to 77, while more than 30 patients are still being treated in different facilities in Gauteng. Gauteng Department of Health’s spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said: “Out of the 88 patients who were treated at various health facilities – Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, Helen Joseph Hospital, South Rand Hospital, Tembisa Hospital, Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital and Hillbrow Community Health Centre – only 31 people are still receiving care. “Of the 31 patients admitted, only five still need semi-critical care.…

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is now offering its services in your mother tongue – and this includes sign language. The department said it wants to understand and know what’s wrong with patients who visit its facilities, and it understands the strain people go through trying to understand or “speak health” is overwhelming at times, especially when it’s in their fourth or fifth language. It has therefore launched its own telephonic interpretation and sign language service aimed at putting people first and allowing for clear communication in the delivery of healthcare. President Cyril Ramaphosa has led the annual commemoration in honour of police officers killed in the line of duty across South Africa. Thirty-four police officers and reservists died in the line of duty between April 1 last year and March 31 this year. Addressing the sombre event at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, Ramaphosa said there must be justice – “and there will be justice” – for the families of the fallen “heroes and heroines”. “The hard work of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations, known as the Hawks, has resulted in the arrest of 76 suspected police murderers over the past year. President Cyril Ramaphosa says the ANC is working on securing an outright victory, but the issue of coalitions will be determined based on the outcome of the elections. He said coalitions were already being discussed, with Deputy President Paul Mashatile leading an initiative to develop a framework on coalitions to avoid political instability in the government as had happened in municipalities across the country. The South African Defence Force (SANDF) has dismissed claims that its system was hacked, after reports of a data breach in its information system. The SANDF issued a statement dismissing the claims, and suggested insider information leaked from within one of its departments. “It can be confirmed that the system of the Department of Defence has not been hacked. This is the work of criminal syndicates within the cyberspace, aided through information leaked from the department,” the statement read. Last week, a hacker group by the name of Snatch claimed credit for the breach. The group said it had extracted 200 terabytes of data from the defence’s network. The City is asking for assistance in tracking the suspects who shot and wounded a law-enforcement officer in Hillview, Beacon Valley, Mitchells Plain. The incident on Saturday morning left the officer with a bullet in the head. He was the third officer to be shot in less than two months. A National traffic police officer has died and a second officer is recovering in hospital following “a brutal attack” while the two were on duty in Johannesburg. “The attack took place in the early hours of Sunday morning when the officers, on duty near Diepsloot in Johannesburg, went to get food at a nearby filling station,” said Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) spokesperson Simon Zwane. A nineteenth body has been found inside a lavish house in Makhado (formerly Louis Trichardt) where alleged cash-in-transit robbers were killed during a shootout with different police units on Friday.
