Dr Muhammed Shukri Effendi, the first non-white medical doctor to graduate from the institution, emerged as a beacon of change and a symbol of breaking down barriers.
Born in 1915 in Pepper Street (Bo-Kaap), Muhammed Shukri demonstrated an early aptitude for education. After receiving his foundational education at Trafalgar High School, he earned a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) degree from the medical school at the University of Cape Town.
