Film enthusiasts are being treated this month with the European Film Festival on in Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg. ActionSA in the Western Cape has written to the speaker of the legislature, Daylin Mitchell, requesting that the Ethics Committee investigate Premier Alan Winde’s trip to the US. The trip, with a small delegation, in early June to lobby for the renewal of South Africa’s membership in the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa) cost more than R1.6 million. The trade act allows eligible sub-Saharan African countries duty-free access to the US market for more than 1 800 products, in addition to more than 5 000 products eligible for duty-free access under the Generalised System of Preferences programme. Award-winning musician Nathi Mankayi went back to prison but this time he went to motivate inmates. The artist, who shot to fame in 2015 with his song Nomvula, visited Pollsmoor Correctional Centre on Wednesday and spoke to offenders. Mankayi told the inmates that he was raised by his mother and as a teenager he wanted to look like his peers. “I started smoking and hanging out with a bad crowd and then found myself in prison. I kept going back until I decided I didn’t want that life anymore. One of the three escaped prisoners on the run is a suspect in a Golden Arrow bus robbery caught on video that went viral earlier this month. Khuma Ningo was arrested along with Azole Madubela, Khumzi Ningo, Thulani Juta and Khanya Sopukana for a string of armed robberies in which they used a rifle to rob the drivers and passengers of their belongings. Yesterday, the accused appeared for a bail application. Ningo, Vuyani Bonkolo, Khaya Supulana and two others escaped from custody while in the holding cells at Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday afternoon. The station commander of Jacobsdal police in the Free State, arrested for theft of money, has been released on warning. “It is alleged that on February 17, 2022, a man was arrested for dealing in dagga in Jacobsdal. “The dagga and money to the value of R2 460 were booked in for evidence. After the arrested man’s case was finalised in court, he went back to the police station to get his property, but they could not find the money,” said Free State police spokesperson, Captain Lorraine Earle. Ex-Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone was spared an immediate prison sentence yesterday after he pleaded guilty to misleading Britain’s tax authority about overseas assets worth more than £400 million.
