Four people, including two City officials, were arrested for a housing scam. They were apprehended in Mfuleni for allegedly selling municipal plots at the Extension 2 Mfuleni project. They will appear in Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court this morning, facing 11 fraud charges. A non-profit organisation (NPO) in Cape Town has called for speed restrictions of 30km/h around schools, after a report revealed that 10.2% of deaths due to motor vehicle-related crashes last year were children. ChildSafe, an injury prevention unit at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, is an NPO that aims to reduce and prevent injuries to children through research, education, and recommendations to legislation. The report, released by the Road Traffic Management Corporation Report, stated that 12 436 South Africans died in these crashes, and 10.2% were listed as children up to 14 years old. ChildSafe said various factors contributed to the increased risk, such as inadequate road infrastructure, a lack of supervision, and no alternative but to walk. THE torched remains of a man found in Samora Machel informal settlement earlier in the week has been identified as that of 28-year-old Sibusiso Christopher Ntliziywana from Browns Farm, near Philippi. According to initial police reports, Ntliziywana died at the hands of community members who suspected him of committing crime in the area. They accosted and torched him before he died of multiple injuries. Ntliziywana’s father, Mabhuti Sijorha, told the Cape Argus his son was not killed by community members, but by a group of young men who were known to be his friends. Wind energy was the main talking point of Premier Alan Winde’s energy digicon yesterday. Winde’s guest, South African Wind Energy Association CEO Niveshen Govender, highlighted the importance of capitalising on wind, especially in the Western Cape where it is abundant. He said that with 36 projects under way, generating an installed capacity of 3 442MW, the sector was becoming firmly entrenched, and utilising this renewable energy source was vital. “Wind energy accounts for the largest share of renewable energy technologies in the energy mix currently. This is the equivalent of powering more than three million households nationally,” Govender said. AN award-winning Cape Town street artist to paint a 36m² mural translating a message of hope to those suffering from depression and anxiety. In commemoration of Mental Health Awareness Month, artist Chad Hanning, fondly known as Bushy Wop, will paint a mural on the side of a prominent building in Regent Road, Woodstock. The mural will display an array of bright colours and flowers, and will also be digitally superimposed on to other prominent buildings and landmarks across the country for the remainder of this month. A metro police officer allegedly shot and killed a suspect who opened fire at them. The officers were on patrol in Manenberg on Monday evening around 7pm when they heard gunfire. According to Mayco member for safety and security JP Smit, the officials observed a suspect crouching in Rio Grande Street, discharging a firearm. “They ordered him to lower his weapon, but he fired at them, and when officers returned fire, the suspect ran away in an attempt to evade custody. “The wounded suspect collapsed shortly afterwards and officers immediately summoned medical assistance – however, the 35-year-old male was declared deceased by medical personnel a short while later. “A 9mm pistol sans serial number was recovered, along with six rounds of ammunition in the magazine. The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has told the portfolio committee on basic education plans to revisit the school quintile system. This after issues with the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) and quintiles arose in the DBE’s briefing to the committee on Wednesday. Public schools are divided into five quintile rankings – schools in quintile one to three are “no fee-paying” schools. Quintile’s four to five were “fee-paying” schools. The NSNP works hand-in-hand by providing meals, reaching quintile 1-3 schools. Portfolio committee chairperson Bongiwe Pricilla Mbinqo-Gigaba, said: “What progress is made for reviewing the quintile system?
