A STRANDED lone hiker on a cliff and an 11-year-old Irish boy who fell and injured himself were among those rescuers attended to at the weekend. The Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR) said its teams responded to at least five incidents on Saturday. In the first incident, a lone hiker, 29, called the emergency service after finding himself stranded in the middle of a sheer cliff on Table Mountain. He began hiking the India Venster trail from the Lower Cableway Station, veering left from the main path towards Right Face near the top. “Uncertain of his path, the hiker scrambled up a rocky outcrop but ended up stranded on a cliff, awaiting rescue from WSAR,” it said. IN A TRULY unique expression of interfaith solidarity, a Shabbat, Iftar (fast-breaking meal), and Good Friday service was held at St George’s Cathedral on Friday, a site of many interfaith solidarity convergences. The gathering was organised by SA Jews for a Free Palestine (SAJFP), St George’s Cathedral and cathedral dean Father Michael Weeder, and the Bo-Kaap Civic and Ratepayers Association. DESPITE the anticipated higher visitor numbers over the Easter weekend to the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP), no crime-related incidents were reported but there were several fires at the tourist attraction. A few weeks ago, Statistics South Africa released its youth unemployment numbers, recording 32.1% unemployed young people in the fourth quarter of 2023. This is an increase of 0.2% from the third quarter, which recorded 31.9% young people who were not working. Stats SA reported that the majority, 38.6%, of unemployed people did not complete matric, whereas those who did complete matric stood at 33.7%; unemployed graduates recorded at 9.6%. A GROUP of bikers from various clubs across the province teamed up again to make Easter a special time for underprivileged communities. The Ottery Boys MCC Bikers Club hosted their eighth annual pickled fish run on Good Friday – the largest in the club’s history of giving back to communities. This year was no different, as more than 80 bikers from various clubs in the Western Cape formed a convoy, with vehicles loaded with pickled fish, hot-cross buns and Easter eggs for residents in Lotus River, Parkwood and Freedom Park informal settlement.
