THE younger brother of alleged 28s gang boss, Ralph Stanfield, has joined his sibling in prison after he was busted for allegedly stashing more than R4.6 million in a Claremont flat, allegedly for his brother. Shocking court documents revealed that Kyle Lee Stanfield, 34, allegedly received instructions from Ralph, who is being held in Brandvlei Prison, to remove items police had planned to seize in a raid. Hours before his appearance in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Monday, police revealed that a protracted investigation led to his arrest. A FAMILY has been left traumatised after their young children were killed in crossfire in Gugulethu. Loyola Gwadiso, 8, and her 1-year-old brother, Khanide, were killed on Monday. The incident happened as the children were playing about 15m from their Lotus Park informal settlement home, when the suspects were chasing their targets between narrow walkways. The siblings were rushed to hospital where the parents were informed that they both succumbed to injuries. HIP hop legend Emile Jansen was among several South Africans who were honoured for their individual work in a special award ceremony hosted by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Tuesday. Jansen was honoured with the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver. The Order of Ikhamanga is awarded to South African citizens who have excelled in the fields of arts, culture, literature, music, journalism, or sport. Jansen, 55, along with other recipients, was on a list recently announced by the Chancellor of the National Orders, director-general in the Presidency, Phindile Baleni. The Western Cape Department of Social Development (DSD) aims to ramp up its awareness-raising initiatives about child abuse during Child Protection Month. Observed during May, the period is designated for child protection as enshrined in the Constitution. Social Development MEC Sharna Fernandez said some adults still fail to recognise that children have rights. She said parents and guardians are responsible for their children, and where they may need support, the team in DSD can assist. “Unfortunately, there are many cases of parents or guardians letting children down, by abusing, neglecting, or abandoning them,” she said. Between April 2023 and December 2023, the department recorded 2 603 cases of deliberate neglect. This exploding and worrying trend must be addressed by the franchise licence holders in this country because the franchisees could not care less. These children stand at the ordering points begging for money and food, in the process harassing customers. THE Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) said it would stand by the ANC in the upcoming elections, going door-to-door to ensure it mobilised workers to vote. LORENZO Davids’s article “Vote to unify polarised political cultures” (Cape Argus, April 29) should be compulsory reading for all politicians (and would-be politicians). The appalling level of identity politics based on “tribes” or groups is hurting our country. The Daily Maverick had a Zapiro cartoon showing people running away, and covering their ears while John Steenhuisen was shown singing. I found it deeply disheartening as the implication was that people will only listen if you say what they want to hear, in the way they want to hear it. On April 27, 1994, South Africa celebrated the triumph of democracy. Voting queues brimmed with hope and a sense of unity as we ushered-in a new era. The breaking of apartheid shackles was a monumental achievement. I believe South African trade unions were instrumental in this newfound freedom, with workers making enormous sacrifices to ensure its realisation. I remember Cosatu president Willie Madisha’s fiery leadership galvanising the people and shaking the Nationalist government to its core. As we celebrated Freedom Day’s 30th anniversary on April 27, 2024, I reflected on the elation I felt three decades ago and why it faded over the following years. The violence that South Africa’s most vulnerable citizens, the children, experience is often condemned, and calls are made for more punitive actions to be taken against the perpetrators. Yet, daily, we continue to see children being treated in the most harrowing and despicable ways. In recent months, there has been a lot of reflection on the past three decades of freedom and the miracle that is South Africa, a miracle for a country that avoided a racially based violent transition route, thanks to, among many others, Nelson Mandela. While a violent route was avoided, a lot of sticking points remained, sore ones, that have haunted Madiba’s nation in the past 30 years. The Palestine Solidarity Campaign said they were concerned by the attacks on activists protesting in Cape Town. This comes after a video of pro-Israeli protesters attacking a man and woman during a solidarity protest in support of Palestine made its rounds on social media. The assault took place where people who stand against the Israel-Gaza conflict usually protest at the corner of Buller Louw Drive and Ou Kaapse Weg in Sun Valley, Fish Hoek. The two-minute clip also shows a woman telling a pro-Palestinian female she would be raped by Hamas because she is “beautiful”. The first shot is of the two men, whose names are now known, holding the pro-Palestinian protester in a choke-hold while a woman standing close by mouths profanities. On this Workers’ Day, instead of merely celebrating those in work, let us turn our attention to the 32.1% unemployment rate and 11.7 million South Africans who don’t have the security and independence of a job. And let us not rest until there is dignified work for all. If this ANC government is not prepared to make the changes needed to achieve this, then let us replace them on May 29 with a government that understands the importance of jobs and what it takes to create them. A government that will create an environment that allows job-creating businesses to thrive. Until the ANC-led government is prepared to abandon the crony enrichment scam that is BEE, and radically reform restrictive labour legislation, none of President Ramaphosa’s talk will mean a thing.…

This month, the president of Rwanda conducted a sombre event that sought to commemorate 30 years since the genocide suffered by the Tutsis, where 800 000 were slaughtered by the Hutus who were in the majority. Rwanda gained independence from Belgium in 1962 and the Hutus were left in power. The Hutus’ rule displayed many discriminatory practices against the Tutsis which ultimately led to the 1994 genocide. It can be inferred from the fiasco that the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) fiddled with the search for a strategic equity partner to hand-pick an unqualified bidder. I believe the oft-recurring interference in the corporate governance affairs contributed to the sudden departure of former SAA CEO Vuyani Jarana. Jarana was cut short of achieving the objectives of the airline’s short-term survival with considerations for growth in the long term. WHILE the country and the world commemorated Workers’ Day, South African workers had little to celebrate thanks to challenges including salary increases that are far below the interest rate. The country’s stability has been marred by protests over wage hikes. Certain protests brought some cities to a standstill because services could not be rendered when workers downed tools.
