Seventeen prison commissioners are due to face disciplinary action over dereliction of duty for allowing illegal contraband into their respective prisons. It is reported that about 589 prison warders would also face disciplinary action for opening spaza shops in prisons and about 1 245 prison warders would face disciplinary charges in connection with sex-for-cash schemes. There have also been (unconfirmed) reports that 7 689 prison warders would face disciplinary action for smuggling banned items into prisons. On Wednesday evening, the Department of Correctional Services conducted a multidisciplinary operation together with police at Johannesburg Prison (Sun City), where inmates at the Medium A Section were searched for weapons, drugs and cellphones. SOUTH Africa will once again be sending a large contingent of firefighters to Alberta in Canada, as over 170 wildfires continue to ravage the region, resulting in thousands of evacuations. Over 200 firefighters and a management team from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment’s Working on Fire (WoF) programme, will leave on Saturday. WoF is an Expanded Public Works programme launched in 2003, aimed at providing work opportunities to young persons. The team will depart via a charter arranged by the Canadian Inter-agency Forest Fire Centre from the Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport in Mbombela. The deployment is expected to last 39 days, inclusive of travel and rest days. A CASE of culpable homicide has been opened following the deaths of three people in a collision involving three trucks along the notorious stretch of N1 highway near Touwsriver. Western Cape Department of Mobility spokesperson Muneera Allie said the heavy motor vehicle collision claimed the lives of three people at 8.30pm on Wednesday on the N1 close to Touwsriver, which resulted in the closure of the road until yesterday. THE murder of a Sea Point hotel manager in an alleged underworld murder plot is back in the spotlight following the arrest of Colin Booysen and five accused. CORRUPTION accused former sports minister Zizi Kodwa has resigned as a MP. The former ANC spokesperson resigned from the role amid allegations of corruption. The ANC said secretary-general Fikile Mbalula received a letter from Kodwa formally communicating his resignation as an MP. The ANC said they received the letter on Wednesday. “The letter is dated 24 July 2024, and the resignation is with immediate effect,” said the statement. ANC national spokesperson, Zuko Godlimpi, said the ANC accepted the resignation and they wished Kodwa well.
