A sewage pump failure in Camps Bay that resulted in discharge into the ocean has forced the continued closure of the beach as water quality testing is under way. A loose flange, used to connect pipes on pump 1, caused a failure at the station and was detected by the City. While repairs are in the final stages, water and sanitation mayco member Zahid Badroodien said pump 2 is active and the pump station has resumed normal operations. A DAY after a teacher was shot dead in the presence of Grade R pupils at a Durban school, another school has come under attack. The KwaZulu-Natal department of education said armed gunmen stormed Mukelani Primary School in KwaMashu on Tuesday. “According to reports, a group of criminals stormed the school premises, accosted and robbed the teachers of their personal belongings. They also forced them to transfer money from their accounts under duress,” KZN education department Muzi Mahlambi said. A BISHOP Lavis feeding programme that received a donation of food items and blankets worth more than R100 000 plans to pay it forward by sharing with surrounding community support projects. The goods were donated to the Bishop Lavis Paradise feeding scheme as Survé Philanthropies in collaboration with Cape Grand China concluded Mandela Month. The handover took place on Tuesday at Greenlands Primary School, where the blankets and ingredients such as flour, rice, cooking oil and baked beans were donated in aid of feeding the needy from different communities in Bishop Lavis, Belhar and Nooitgedacht. TWO lifeguards from the Milnerton Surf Lifesaving Club have been hailed for assisting two men and their dogs swept out to sea at Lagoon Beach. The two men in distress, one believed to be a Milnerton resident, and the two dogs, were swept out by strong currents close to the lagoon's mouth around 5:30pm on Tuesday. Reuben Mc Lachlan, a 22-year-old lifeguard, said he learned of the incident via the life-saving WhatsApp group. He said when he arrived at the beach along with a fellow lifeguard, they saw the men on the far side of the lagoon, at Milnerton Beach. PLANS are in place to save the seabirds in Lambert’s Bay impacted by an oil spill along the West Coast. The spill occurred after the MV Ultra Galaxy, a Panama-registered cargo ship, broke apart over the weekend. The cargo vessel, which had run aground on July 9 while en route to Dar es Salaam with a load of fertiliser, was heavily damaged by powerful waves from the cold front that hit the Western and Northern Cape regions over the weekend.
