HUNDREDS of people participated in the annual DeafSA Western Cape 5km Silent Walk, an awareness initiative to bridge the gap between the deaf and hearing. The event was the 10th of its kind, hosted by DeafSA Western Cape, commencing at their offices in Hemlock Street, Newlands, on Saturday. Non-deaf persons were given earplugs to experience what it’s like for those who are deaf. DeafSA Western Cape provincial director Jabaar Cassiem Mohamed said the walk was started in 2014 and this year saw 360 participants taking part. “I started this because of the need to bridge the gap between the deaf and the hearing communities. THE Fish Hoek Valley Historical Association will hold an illustrated talk on one of the town’s most famous families – the Peers family. The talk will take place at the Fish Hoek Bowling Club on September 12 at 4.30pm. Peers Cave was discovered and excavated by amateur archaeologist Victor Peers in 1927. Peers and his son, Bertie, who were residents of Fish Hoek, excavated Peers Cave over several years and discovered and documented Khoisan rock art. This also included stone tools and an ancient burial site. However, Margaret Gundry, the speaker, who is a volunteer at the Fish Hoek Valley Museum, said the talk would focus more on the family than the cave. “I have always been interested in history and genealogy,“ she said. Professor Mongane Wally Serote was inaugurated as a South African poet laureate in 2018, following in the footsteps of other veteran poets, Keorapetse Kgositsile and Mazisi Kunene. Cape Town’s James Matthews dies at 95 TRIBUTES have poured in for renowned Struggle poet and writer James Matthews, 95, who died in his sleep in Cape Town on Saturday. Born in District Six, Matthews started work as a journalist, writing for a variety of publications including the Golden City Post and the Cape Times, as well as serving as the news editor of Cape Town’s Muslim News newspaper. Notable was his powerful short story, Azikwelwa, published in 1958, from his debut short story collection, which had as its backdrop the bus boycott of 1957.
