TWO men, Jacobus Barendse and Ashley Diergal, have been sentenced in the Western Cape High Court to life imprisonment for the murder of 82-year-old Reginald Arthur Gordon, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said. NPA spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalila, said the court convicted Barendse and Diergal on charges of housebreaking with intent to rob and robbery with aggravating circumstances, and murder. Advocate Emily van Wyk, who led the State’s case, told the court that Gordon lived with Alton De Wet and his fiancé Arista Coetzee in Strand. Gordon was De Wet’s father’s friend and recommended Barendse for construction work in the couple’s house, Van Wyk told the court. Disaster struck at two schools on Saturday, each sustaining extensive fire damage. Bastion Primary School in Brackenfell and Villiersdorp Secondary School in the Overberg, each sounded their emergency alarms when the fires broke out. On Saturday, residents, local and private safety crews as well as politicians stood together, trying to save one of their most-prized possessions in Villiersdorp. Ten classrooms have since been damaged, affecting the learning environment of 385 pupils. The fire that started at around 3.54pm on Saturday afternoon, took almost four hours to contain.
