ANIMAL Law Reform SA, EMS Foundation and Khoi Chief Stephen Fritz have asked the North Gauteng High Court to declare that elephants in captivity at the Johannesburg Zoo enjoy rights enshrined in the Constitution. The Joburg City Parks and Zoo, the City of Joburg, Gauteng Department of Economic Development, Agriculture, Environment and Rural Development, as well as Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Minister Dion George have been hauled to court in the matter. The General Industries Workers Union of South Africa’s (Giwusa) president, Mametlwe Sebei, has proposed that the national minimum wage (NMW) be increased to R15 000. This comes after the DA submitted written comments to the National Minimum Wage Committee opposing an increase to the minimum wage for the next financial year. The NMW committee invited stakeholders to submit their responses on the possible adjustments to the minimum wage in 2025. According to the DA, increasing the minimum wage would exacerbate the unemployment rate. Therefore, it should remain unchanged. BO-KAAP residents have expressed strong opposition to a liquor licence application sought by Dorp Hotel, situated in the predominantly Muslim and senior community. Last week, several residents gathered at the hotel, situated on 273 Longmarket Street and Schotsche Kloof, to share their concerns with the hotel management. POLICE are closing the net on kidnappers as they rescued an 84-year-old British national who was held captive in a shack in Worcester over the weekend. Alleged underworld kingpin Nafiz Modack faces another high court trial, this time alongside his wife Rehana in Gauteng. The couple and others, including police officers, are charged with firearm licence fraud. Modack was taken from Goodwood Prison and transported to Gauteng last week, where he was recharged for the firearms case months after it was provisionally withdrawn. THE Special Investigating Unit (SIU) is probing the millions of rand paid to private lawyers and advocates by the Office of the State Attorney over several years. This emerged in a lawsuit filed by senior counsel, advocate Viwe Notshe, in the Gauteng High Court. The State Attorney’s office refused to pay Notshe’s invoices, citing that the SIU was probing his other invoices, amounting to R27 million. The invoices Notshe wants paid do not form part of the SIU investigation. In court, the Office of State Attorney argued that until the SIU investigation was completed, it did not know what amount, if any, of the R27m paid to Notshe would have to be repaid.
