A FOUR-year-old boy has become the second child wounded in a spate of shootings to break out in Elsies River. The child is one of the three people who were shot on Wednesday evening. A STAGGERING R360 million has been spent on overtime for the SAPS VIP Protection Unit over the past two financial years. This has sparked concerns that politicians’ safety was being prioritised over public safety. According to Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu, the unit, tasked with protecting ministers and deputy ministers, racked up R198,045,844 in overtime pay in 2022/23 and R161,885,074 in 2023/24. The exorbitant overtime bill has been attributed to the extraordinary working hours of close protection officers, who claim 100 hours of overtime per month. With the number of “VIPs” increasing, the SAPS VIP Protection Unit's overtime costs were expected to skyrocket during the current term of office. IN A HEART-warming discovery, an adopted 24-year-old from Gansbaai near Hermanus has been reunited with her three brothers and father. It is the second time Rochelle Franken’s fate was met with an extension of her family tree. Isidima Children’s Village founder and director, Soria Franken, adopted Rochelle when she was just a baby. Rochelle recalls: “I remember at night how I would pray for a sister because I always saw how the other children would play with their sisters.” In 2007, her prayers were answered, when she learnt her biological mother had given birth a year prior to a baby girl. The Gauteng Department of Health is concerned with the recurring incidents of food poisoning in the province. This is after more than 70 matric pupils from various schools in Fochville were admitted to different hospitals after suspected food poisoning yesterday. The department confirmed that the 74 female learners, from Fochville Secondary School, Badirile Secondary School and Wedela Technical School, were rushed to hospital yesterday. At least 42 were treated at Fochville Clinic and 32 at Kokosi Clinic, with most eventually referred to Carletonville District Hospital. According to department spokesperson Steve Mabona, the affected learners are in a stable condition. Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has commended what he called the outstanding work of the South African Police Service (SAPS) following the successful arrest of a sergeant, after an extensive two-month investigation led by the highly respected Captain Keshi Mabunda. Mabunda is renowned for his work in dismantling insurance fraud syndicates. One of the successful convictions was that of former police officer and convicted serial killer Nomia Rosemary Ndlovu, who orchestrated the murders of loved ones for payouts on insurance policies. The sergeant, 43, has been linked to the murders of six people in and around Polokwane, Limpopo.
