NEARLY 200 000 spaza shops have been inspected since President Cyril Ramaphosa’s address on the deaths of several children due to foodborne illnesses on November 15. The announcement formed part of a media briefing by Minister in The Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, on the outcomes of a Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday. The media briefing took place at Parliament yesterday. ATTORNEY Zuko Nonxuba has been struck from the roll of legal practitioners by the Western Cape High Court, after he was found to be dishonest and lacking integrity. The ruling was made after the Legal Practice Council (LPC) brought an application to remove Nonxuba, following complaints of him allegedly stealing money from vulnerable clients. According to court documents, Nonxuba specialised in personal injury and medical negligence cases in various provinces in the country. A majority of the cases involved parents of children who sustained birth injuries due to medical negligence, resulting in hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy, foetal distress and cerebral palsy. FORMER National Assembly speaker, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, is expected back in the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria on January 20. This, after her corruption case was postponed yesterday to hear an application for the State to disclose information to her. Her legal team argued that she needs the documents, which include information contained in a SAPS diary. She has expressed her intention to plead not guilty to the corruption and money laundering charges against her. According to the indictment, the charges relate to her tenure between 2016 and 2019 when she was minister of defence. The ongoing fraud case against South African Football Association (SAFA) president Danny Jordaan, alongside his co-accused Gronie Hluyo (SAFA CFO) and businessman Trevor Neethling, has been postponed to December 10. The trio appeared at the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Palm Ridge on Thursday to face charges of fraud totalling R1.3 million. The postponement was granted to allow two of the accused to file formal applications aimed at having the charges struck off the court’s roll. Cybercrime expert, Dr Craig Pederson, is warning South Africans to be on the look for online scams this festive season as cybercrime continues to surge. He highlighted that swindlers have infiltrated the cybercrime market, and gather sensitive information due to a weakness in personal security. “It would probably take me between five and 10 minutes to gain access to a significant amount of your personal information, more than you would be comfortable with,” said Pederson. Cyber criminals have moved on to use sophisticated methods to defraud people, such as social engineering scams, deep-fake audio and video manipulations, among others. TWO suspects have appeared in court for a shooting that left five people dead in Mfuleni on Sunday. Vuyile Gqomo and Lwando Nakani were taken into custody on Tuesday, and charged with murder and illegal possession of ammunition. Speaking at the unveiling yesterday, former comrades and close associates recalled Asmal’s unique quirks, his hard work and his anti-apartheid campaigning, particularly in Ireland which had been his home for 27 years. Asmal passed away on June 22, 2011, at the age of 76 having served, first, as Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry and then later as Education Minister. A CAPE Town video showing a bakkie attempting to cross a pedestrian bridge has left South Africans with more questions than answers. The video found its way onto numerous social media channels, and shows what appears to be a Daihatsu Gran Max bakkie getting stuck just before a hairpin bend on a bridge designed for foot traffic only. How this was not obvious to the driver of the bakkie is anyone’s guess. It also invited many questions about the driver’s state of mind.
