A DEVASTATING crash claimed the lives of nine people, mostly mothers, in the early hours of yesterday along the N2 near the Mthunzini Toll Plaza, casting a shadow over Mother’s Day in KwaZulu-Natal. According to the KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, the collision occurred at around 6:47am and involved a tow truck and a Hyundai H-1 minibus transporting members of the Zion Christian Church. “On this Mother’s Day, early this morning around 6.47am, I received a report from our team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate informing me about a horrific accident that claimed the lives of nine people, mostly mothers,” Duma said in a statement. South Africa’s annual national residential property price inflation was 5% in December last year, an increase from 4.9% in November 2024. This is according to the Residential Property Price Index (RPPI) December 2024, released by Statistics South Africa on Thursday, which shows that the residential property price index (RPPI) increased by 0.4% month-on-month in December 2024. “The main contributors to the 5% annual national inflation rate were Western Cape (8.6% and contributing 3.1 percentage points) and Gauteng (2.3% and contributing 0.9 of a percentage point),” it read. The RPPI for all metropolitan areas increased by 4.8% between December 2023 and December 2024. THE Department of Transport is on a mission to find an interim solution to address the issue of reliance on the current driving licence card machine. The department was responding to a statement by the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) following the announcement that the machine had been repaired and operations resumed. The breakdown of the machine, according to the department, led to a backlog of more than 700 000 outstanding cards to be printed. Outa said the machine is prone to regular breakdowns and is bound to break down again. The organisation said the machine also lacks modern security features. RED Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital along with its partners, the Children’s Hospital Trust and ChildSafe South Africa, are urging caregivers and parents to protect their children from burns. The provincial health department observed burns awareness week in the first week of May. According to statistics released by the children’s hospital, last year they conducted over 3 000 outpatient consults in the burns clinic and admitted 586 patients to their burns ward, with most admissions being considered serious burns. According to the hospital, more than 80% of the burns were due to children being exposed to hot liquids, such as boiling water, spilled warm drinks like tea, or bath water being too hot.
