Taxi violence in Strand has led to the shooting of another taxi driver ahead of today’s Task Team meeting. The shooting occurred in Lwandle on amid the ongoing conflict between rival taxi associations Cape Congress of Democratic Taxi Associations (Codeta) and the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (Cata) regarding routes. PRESIDENT Cyril Ramaphosa’s national dialogue to address pressing issues in the country will include the divisions created by US President Donald Trump’s offer of resettlement to white Afrikaners as well as issues on unemployment and poor governance. Ramaphosa yesterday announced the appointment of an “eminent persons group” made up of 31 prominent South Africans who will lead the National Dialogue, set to take place on August 15. ENTERTAINMENT company MultiChoice, releasing its results for the year ended March 31, 2025, disclosed a loss of 2.8 million active linear subscribers in the past two financial years. A MANENBERG mother has expressed her shock and horror after her young son was allegedly neglected at Heideveld Day Clinic. The incident on Monday, which was shared by the family in a video clip, has also highlighted concerns about the state of public healthcare services. The young boy, whose identity has been withheld to protect his privacy, was taken to the clinic by his grandmother at around 5pm after complaining of widespread pain. A GROUP of women who travelled from across the country to present the case of murdered children say they were insulted and verbally abused by an MP during a meeting of the Portfolio Committee on Police in Cape Town yesterday. MUNICIPAL police services across the country are set to be given more powers, including enforcing immigration laws and controlling and preventing the sale of stolen goods. The SA Police Service (SAPS) is proposing changes to the regulations for municipal police services first promulgated in June 1999. According to the SAPS, the proposed revision of the regulations will affect the powers conferred on police officers that may also be exercised by a member of the municipal police services, including metro cops. Municipal police services currently exercise a wide range of powers similar to those of SAPS members, such as investigating crimes under the Criminal Procedure Act, drugs and drug trafficking, domestic violence, and stock theft, among others. The death toll from the devastating floods in the Eastern Cape has climbed to 49, Premier Oscar Mabuyane confirmed yesterday, describing the situation as one of the most painful tragedies to hit the province in recent years. The floods, driven by relentless rain, strong winds, and landslides, have wreaked havoc, particularly across the OR Tambo and Amathole District Municipalities. Recently a 3-year-old was left unattended for hours on end resulting in his death, and the girl child is no longer safe in South African schools.
