AS THE Department of Transport scrambles to clear the driving licence card backlog caused by the breakdown of the sole card-printing machine in April, a call has gone out for Transport Minister Barbara Creecy to waive fines. The department reported a recent backlog of 690 000 cards, down roughly 43 000 from the 733 000 that was announced a week ago. Advocate Stefanie Fick, of the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa), wrote to Creecy on Tuesday and asked her to consider announcing a moratorium on fines related to expired driver’s licence cards for motorists who have already applied for renewals, and that no temporary licences should be required until all backlogs have been cleared. ONE of the two suspects accused of the shooting that claimed the lives of three children at a barbershop in Khayelitsha has been killed, hours after appearing in court. Athule Mtsha was shot dead in Nkanini, Cape Town, three weeks ago. He died alongside another man in Ntlazane Street. Police spokesperson, Wesley Twigg, said: “Police responded to a shooting complaint on May 26 at about 1.15pm in Ntlazane Road, Nkanini. Upon arrival, they found two unknown males with gunshot wounds to their bodies.” The motive for the attack is unknown and no arrests have been made. EVEN though the increase in the cost of living has slowed over the past year, declining by 2.4 percentage points year-on-year, the average monthly bills have still, in theory, increased by 2.6% between last May and now – adding R21 000 to bills over a year. Statistics South Africa’s latest inflation publication, for May 2025, shows that the consumer price index was 2.8% on a yearly basis last month. This compares well with a year ago, when it was 5.2%. However, inflation compounds and items keep going up every month. WORKERS of Denel, the state-owned arms manufacturer, picketed outside the company’s head office in Centurion yesterday, demanding a 7% salary increment that was agreed upon almost a year ago. The workers affiliated to the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) said they grew impatient with the delay in implementing the agreement, prompting them to stage the protest to pressure management into meeting their demand. The picket coincided with a meeting between the workers’ union representatives and the company’s board members to discuss the ongoing dispute over salary increases. Numsa spokesperson, Phakamile-Hlubi Majola, said: “Workers have been denied increases for five financial years. THE City of Cape Town and national government departments are jointly seeking a High Court eviction order for foreign nationals occupying sites in Ysterplaat and Bellville, while housing rights activists Ndifuna Ukwazi have criticised the application, arguing for housing as a human right. The City said they would launch the application for an eviction of the remainder of foreign nationals who were unlawfully occupying sites at Wingfield in Voortrekker Road, and Paint City in Bellville. “While hundreds of foreign nationals have accepted support to relocate from these sites over several years, the remaining unlawful occupants have refused all offers of assistance by the state and United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR),” the City said. The growing detachment of biological fathers from their children in South Africa has become a worrying factor as 64.5% of children do not live with their biological fathers. This was revealed by the recent State of South African Fathers (Sosaf) 2024 report, which found that more than half of these children are cared for by other men, with 76% living in household with an adult man. THE Gauteng High Court has rejected an application by Standard Bank to authorise the foreclosure of a mortgage bond it granted over the primary residence of South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi and his wife Norma. Standard Bank asked for a money judgment and leave to execute it against the residence of the Vavis. Their indebtedness arises from a mortgage bond passed over the property in Sandton, Johannesburg.
