THE National Commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) Makgothi Thobakgale and his team have a caseload of more than 40 parolees sentenced for gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide-related crimes who are under their radar for unannounced monitoring visits. TWO men accused of robbing a shop owner at gunpoint, will remain behind bars after their bail appeals failed in the Western Cape High Court. Chumani Thyulu, 21, and Bongo Vula, 22, were arrested on February 22 and are facing charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, and the unlawful possession of a firearm. Thyulu also faces a third charge of unlawful possession of ammunition. After their arrest, the pair – both of whom had a clean criminal record – applied for bail before the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court where their applications were denied. The court found that they failed to prove that exceptional circumstances exist, which is required for bail in a schedule 6 offence. Thyulu is employed and Vula is a student. CRIME fighters in Hanover Park have called for a curfew after three children and an adult were shot and wounded while playing outside amid a gang war in the community. The incident took place in Agulhas Court on Tuesday at 8.30pm when six unknown gunmen opened fire, wounding a 14-year-old girl, two boys, aged 10 and 16, and a 38-year-old man. The victims were rushed to hospital. Crime fighters are calling for a curfew to be put in place as shootings continue.
