The National Treasury yesterday revealed that the interim result of its project of identifying ghost employees in the public service has lifted potential civil servants who may be illegally withdrawing salaries. This emerged when the Public Service and Administration Portfolio Committee was briefed by the National Treasury, DPSA, and Auditor-General South Africa. In a legal tussle between two widows regarding who is the true wife of the now deceased husband, the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) held that an ID document is not a marriage certificate and on its own, did not serve as proof that there was indeed a valid marriage. The City of Cape Town has unveiled a new R13.7 million full-size synthetic soccer pitch at the Fisantekraal Sport Ground. THE Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has revealed they have received 454 reports of assault involving learners on school property between January and July. National Professional Teacher’s Organisation of South Africa (Naptosa) reports that since January, 563 children have fallen victim to violence, leading to high absenteeism and victimisation with gangsterism spilling over into the classroom. Kerry Mauchline, spokesperson for MEC for Education, David Maynier confirmed that assaults on school grounds included “a range of incidents from assault with a weapon to less serious incidents like pushing and shoving, or fighting”. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has welcomed the decision by the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court, which on Wednesday denied the bail application brought by attempted murder accused, Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala. Matlala, who was arrested in April this year, is facing multiple charges, including attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and money laundering. Reacting to the ruling, NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane, said: “The NPA is thrilled about the court decision to deny the accused bail. We believe that the State has a water-tight case against the accused.” Matlala is expected to remain in custody until his next court appearance on October 7. Motorists can look forward to a significantly faster and safer experience at toll plazas by the end of 2025, as tap-to-pay functionality is set to be fully implemented across the country. According to reports, the South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (Sanral) is expected to begin a phased roll-out and testing of tap-to-pay terminals at its 30 self-managed toll plazas in October or November, with full implementation planned by the end of the year. Tap-to-pay was already available at most toll plazas operated by private companies like N3TC and N4TRAC, covering routes such as the N3 between Johannesburg and Durban and the N4 between Pretoria and Komatipoort.
