Vibrant Dutch preservation groups carefully restore and maintain classic tugs, fishing vessels, barges and even the huge passenger ship Rotterdam. German harbours have several preserved craft, while successful British ship preservation projects include the magnificent HMS Victory, Warrior, Cutty Sark, Great Britain and others.
Public apathy ensured that local maritime preservation opportunities – the steam coaster Gamtoos, legendary harbour tug TS McEwen, 1944-vintage Cable Restorer, the famous salvage tug SA Amandla with 47 winters of successful operations astern, and the unique SAS Somerset – disappeared forever, denying future generations the chance to view these ships.
However, using meagre resources and despite adversity, four retired Rear Admirals, Arne Soderlund, Digby Thomson, Kevin Watson, Hanno Teuteberg, and their team have shown the way, laudably restoring the submarine SAS Assegaai (ex-Johanna van der…
