While the World Press Photo awards might not hold the title for the longest running competition (although 62 years is extremely impressive), or the highest number of entries (78,801 photographs entered by 4,738 photographers from 129 countries) or the largest prize for a single images, what it can boast proudly and consistently is that of a showcase of the greatest photojournalism from around the world – something it’s been doing for decades. 2018 was a watershed year for fashion. The veil was pulled off its ugly side by Dolce & Gabbana founder, Stefano Gabbana’s racist rants, Me Too’s outing of fashion photography legends, Mario Testino and Bruce Weber, for sexual misconduct, and public outcry about its disregard for ethical and sustainable production practices. According to global fashion search platform, Lyst, searches for ethical fashion surged by 47% in 2018. Fashion’s recent struggles are no more apparent than in Australia. Famous labels, Collette Dinnigan, Wayne Cooper, Alannah Hill, Jayson Brunsdon, Sass & Bide, Ksubi, Morrissey Edmiston, Charlie Brown, and Lisa Ho, have died. How fashion is seen, advertised, and bought has also changed. For younger generations, digital comes first. Fashion accounts for 27% of online purchasing globally, according to a 2018 Forrester report.…

Dennis Rickard It was 11 years ago that Dennis Rickard’s journey in photography first began. Travelling frequently with work – Rickard has worked in the telecommunications industry for the past 34 years – he thought it would be fantastic to capture some of the amazing sights he was taking in. This interest lay mainly with landscape photography, and Rickard was fascinated with both the natural world and the man-made. While he has an affinity for black and white imagery, Rickard also captures striking images in colour. Throughout history, people have found that creative expression can decrease anxiety, stress, and mood disturbances. This has often been a source of wonder, and many studies have been done. In 2010, researchers Heather L. Stuckey and Jeremy Nobel undertook the massive task of analysing 100 studies focussing on the effects of art on physical and psychological health. Now, there is scientific evidence to suggest that photography, as a form of art and self-expression, helps people to view the world more objectively, increase their self-worth, and reduce the stress hormone, cortisol. Cameras ■ Fujifilm’s GFX100 boasts a massive back-illuminated 102-megapixel sensor along with the X Processor 4. The camera relies on a phase detection algorithm for autofocus which makes full use of 3.76 million phase detection pixels across the entire sensor resulting in faster autofocus, better performance in low light, and significant improvements in tracking autofocus. The GFX100 is the first medium format digital camera to feature five-axis in-body image stabilisation (IBIS), and the first camera of its sensor size (43.8×32.9mm) to offer 4K/30p recording. The new IBIS system offers photographers 5.5 stops of image stabilisation. See Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition, Australian National Maritime Museum, Pyrmont, NSW, until 25 August. The largest wildlife photography competition in the world, on loan from the Natural History Museum in London, the 54th Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition features 100 photographs, shortlisted from over 50,000 entries from 92 countries. It celebrates the diversity of the natural world, from intimate animal portraits to astonishing wild landscapes.
