The Australia’s Top Emerging Photographers edition is without a doubt my favourite to complete. I specifically mention the completion because the task of running the competition is nothing short of gargantuan. This year, the 13th time we’re sought out the region’s best emerging talent, not only did we receive the highest number of entries, but for the first time ever the overall winner of the competition was also named the overall runner-up, winning two separate categories, and then having the judges also rate those two portfolios the best of the category winners. ANIMAL ■ When photographing animals, focus on capturing their essence. I know that sounds vague, but whether it’s in their eyes, colour, texture, or shape, you will be able to create an image that goes beyond just traditional animal photography and connects with your audience. With a focus on showcasing the very best emerging photographic talent across Australia and New Zealand, the awards recognise and acknowledge talented photographers in the early stages of their careers or those simply working towards being the very best photographers they can be.
