It’s a tough job being a car journalist. Hear me out, the hard part is being able to accurately, fairly and objectively evaluate the cars we’re required to drive. With all the travel and access to cars comes great responsibility. You’re spending a lot of money buying a new car and our appraisal and advice must be spot on. We feel that pressure at CAR. To precisely analyse the handling, ride and performance differences between well-matched vehicles in a particular segment is a tricky business. Modern cars – relative to their price – are well-made pieces of machinery. They have to be. With so many derivatives available, it’s a buyers’ market and prospective owners are understandably picky. The rear wheelarches, which partly cover the rear wheels, are a strong Berlina design element as are those double headlamps. PeterPalm12 It’s MGB’s 60th anniversary this year. This was the car that had to fill the massive gap left after its departure in the 1980s following a suitably long life. The F and TF did not fare so well but c’est la vie. The TF was introduced into South Africa shortly after the UK launch and replaced the F. These were important vehicles for MG Rover since the brilliant Mazda MX-5 and Toyota MR2 were there to wrest the affordable sportscar crown from the British. PACKAGING What’s not to like? In an era defined by the Cosworth DFV engine, only the most radical design departures could provide a potential escape from the inevitable mid-grid mire. This is why the P34 was crafted with cleaner aero in mind; by narrowing the front tyres to 10 inches, they fitted behind the 1,5 m front wing. The downside of this drag-reducing concept was that the smaller tyre contact patch necessarily implied reduced braking and cornering performance. No sooner had the dust settled on the reveal of the all-new Raptor, then Ford lifted the veil on its next-generation Everest. Like its predecessor, the new Everest will be underpinned by the third-generation T6 platform with a couple of model-specific revisions to the rear suspension and steering module assemblies. Design-wise, there are several elements borrowed from the Ranger, including the C-clamp LED daytime running lights and clamshell bonnet, while the rear now features a trim bar spanning the brake lamp clusters. The overall dimensions will differ little from those of the outgoing model, except for a 50 mm wider track and a marginally longer wheelbase. In the spring of that year, Hetrick, his wife and his seven-year-old daughter were out for a Sunday drive in their 1948 Chrysler Windsor. Finally, we swapped seats for the iX, a vehicle that represents the new vanguard of EVs. Although its looks have received plenty of criticism, to say BMW is chuffed with how this car turned out would be the understatement of the decade. From its latest-generation powertrain to its radical cabin that’s more like a business class lounge than a car, it has the huge benefit of being the last to market, so BMW’s boffins knew exactly what they were up against, could set targets and build accordingly. Making use of its innovative Carbon Core, it tips the scales at 2 585 kg which, ironically, makes it the heaviest vehicle here by quite some margin, but look beneath the skin and you soon realise it’s endowed with the biggest battery pack.…

GarethD_CARmag EV motoring is opening doors to many new aspects of motoring – instant torque, silent operation and zero exhaust emissions among the number – but it’s also taking away some of the things that motoring enthusiasts hold dear. One of these is the involvement and sense of control offered by a manual transmission. To this end, Toyota has just patented an EV drivetrain control system modelled on a manual gearbox. Along with the H-gate shifter, this system also features a “pseudo-clutch” comprising a third pedal with a feedback generator that mimics the mechanical interplay between clutch and flywheel.
