Another faithful companion complete. This year’s edition of our parks guide marks the first for me being part of but not the first I have consumed. A beast of a project, I’ve seen it come together and digested its innards looking, like you, for inspiration and ideas for my few breaks. What I am now realising, after a few late nights, early rises and too many small changes to remember is that the work that goes into it is not only more than anticipated but also another example of the passion behind the team at Adventures, particularly the crew at Caravan World. CRISTINA VICENTE Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary, SA Cristina Vicente is a woman of passion who loves what she does as a ranger at the Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary, SA. “Since I was a kid I knew I wanted to work in conservation,” Cristina said, with a smile. There are few Australian businesses more deeply connected to family values than BIG4 Holiday Parks. Almost four decades ago, the BIG4 juggernaut was conceived in a ‘back-alley’ meeting between four caravan park owners in Ballarat who felt that if they combined their marketing activities the group could increase awareness of their parks. At every opportunity the BIG4 cooperative members would take to the highways in Victoria, dropping their first brochures in letterboxes from Gippsland to the Grampians, sparking perhaps the first viral campaign in the holiday park industry. On the long, lonely stretch of highway north of Broken Hill you’ll stumble upon the welcome sight of the Packsaddle Roadhouse. No, it’s not a mirage and yes, the beer taps run icy cold. Quench your hard-earned thirst as you wander beneath a canopy of old boots and hats from bygone travellers in the dining hall, imagining the feet and heads that filled them in this harsh but beautiful arid countryside amidst the ancient Barrier Ranges. Made famous by The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, the Palace Hotel is a vibrant, rambling desert oasis full of lush landscape murals, taxidermy animals and a restaurant worth travelling for. A number of scenes from the movie were shot in the pub, and it’s not hard to see why; it absolutely suits the flamboyant nature of the film. Originally known as Mario’s Coffee Palace, the pub’s Italian owner had a vision to reproduce Botticelli’s artwork Birth of Venus on a wall of the pub. A local Aboriginal artist, Gordon Waye, made the recreation of the painting, and Mario was so impressed he commissioned him to paint the entire three-level grand stairwell, the entry foyer and the front bar. “A place that loved a drink, a party and a punt”, wrote the great Henry Lawson about Louth, and the sentiment still rings true today. There’s really not too much more to this tiny, isolated town than Shindy’s Inn, perched on the banks of the Darling River. The place comes to life during the famous Louth Races in August, in which horses scramble through the dust and revellers scramble to the bar to drink their winnings. The races attract locals and tourists alike, who travel from far and wide to join in the tomfoolery of a classic outback event. It’s the power-laden question, which continues to generate debate around the campfire: which is a better portable power alternative - solar or generator? We called for some professional backup to delve into this technical quandary, and discovered that, unfortunately - or fortunately, depending on your view - there’s really no definitive answer. Indeed, both systems have their merits and shortcomings, and both can truly enhance your caravanning experience. Traditionally, Australian vanners have used generators for backup power, or they simply start up their car and charge their van’s batteries from the alternators for energy when they are off the grid. For the last few years, daytime running lights (DRL) have been included as a standard feature on many new vehicles. Daytime running lights (not head, parking or fog lights) are lights that stay on during the day. The concept arose when it became apparent that cars that had their headlights on during the day were more easily seen than those that didn’t. Coupled with that, the development of very bright LED lights has led to the development of DRLs. The Australian Design Rules ran a bit behind the technology and there have previously been some concerns about the legalities of these lights but they are indeed a legal fitting. So what would you consider are the ‘absolute essentials’ for a successful camping trip? Most would suggest you need a half-decent caravan, camper or motorhome, a suitably equipped tow-tug, food and water to sustain you, paper or electronic maps to get you there, stubby holders for happy hour drinks and, of course, the essential marshmallows to toast on the campfire. THREE-AND-A-HALF hours west of Sydney, and sitting on the western side of the Blue Mountains, are New South Wales’ Central Ranges. The Central Ranges is an official wine region of Australia, taking in one of the country’s oldest established vineyards at Mudgee. Although our route was fairly well-patronised, we didn’t want to take any gambles when it came to staying in touch. We had daily check-ins scheduled with our trusty commander-in-chief back in our Melbourne office, who was tasked with ensuring we had arrived at our destination safely each day – good practice for any tourers, really. Not every outback town can boast a pub with an entire wall painted by an Archibald Prizewinning artist, let alone the most remote town in NSW. At the Family Hotel in Tibooburra the service is friendly, the food is tasty and the story of that mural depicting an orgy with the devil? Well, that takes us back to the swinging ’60s when the pub was under the ownership of Barney Davie. Barney’s good mate, renowned Australian artist Clifton Pugh, would visit regularly for outback art expeditions and always stayed at the Family Hotel. While Tibooburra might be the most remote town in NSW, Cameron Corner Store is the most remote pub. Just follow that old Dingo Fence ’til you get to the spot where NSW intersects with Queensland and South Australia, and you’ll find yourself at the bar at Cameron Corner. More of a pub than a store (though we beer-swilling booze hounds fully condone the use of euphemism in our exploits), at Cameron Corner the only thing that penetrates the gentle whir of the wind across the endless outback plains is the belly laugh of the publican and his red dirt-encrusted guests who travelled bloody miles by 4WD to get here. ATM, GTM, GVM and Tare mass - they’re all terms that get thrown around in relation to caravan weights, including by us here at Caravan World. We’ve all heard of the odd dead possum or cane toad in outback water tanks. And many of us know about the risks of water contamination from industrial and agricultural run-off. So it makes sense to ensure that we fill up from clean water sources when we’re on the road. But how much care do we take of our rig’s onboard water storage tanks between trips? Whether we use our rigs and associated gear often or just once in a blue moon, sediments, fungus, bacteria and algae can build up in our water tanks. Even with a new setup, industrial dust and other contaminated residue like pollen may have settled in the tank during installation. Water filters make a huge difference to the quality and taste of water we use. We like the BioMagic 0.5 inline filter which we use to filter water before it even enters our rig’s water tank. The filter is made of 100 per cent coconut carbon and silver ions. The coconut carbon (charcoal) filter removes the chemicals that cause nasty tastes and odours. It also removes a wide range of organic compounds and most disease laden micro-organisms from the water. Possibly one of the most photographed outback pubs in Australia, the Silverton Hotel is an icon of the bush and the social hub of the quirky, ghost town of Silverton. Remember to have a designated (sole use) feeder hose for your camper. Dual purposing your home garden hose is not a good idea. Left lying around in the garden in the sun every day, the hose will degrade and taint the water that runs through it. TURN OVER A NEW LEAF Leaf springs aren’t bulletproof, but replacing them is not a difficult task. After jacking the van and removing the wheel, you can remove the spring. Here, you can see the extent of the damage – the main leaf has snapped. Remove the nuts so that the U-bolts and plates can be removed. With the nuts removed, the U-bolt should just drop off the axle. Grind off the spot welds that secure nut to hangar. Now the rear eyelet piece can be unbolted. Remove the retaining bolt from the spring eyelet.
