Still life art has, throughout the ages, been a staple subject for artists. From ancient Egyptian tomb imagery, to memento mori paintings, and the different experiments with color and composition of the Post-Impressionists, still life work has consistently seen the vessel as a necessity that holds the fruit and is simply just that, a vessel.
Some artists, over time, have given some emphasis to the containers, but bowls, plates, etc. have usually been regulated as the conveyance that presents the far more colorful, symbolic, engaging fruit, or other objects held within.
