HITCH-HIKER SLAYER Jackie Ansell-Lamb, 18, was hitchhiking from London to Manchester when she disappeared, on 8 March 1970. Her body was discovered six days later by a farmer in Square Wood, near Knutsford. Seven months later, in October 1970, teacher Barbara Mayo, 24, set off from her London home to hitchhike north. Six days on, her body was found dumped in woods near Junction 29 of the M1 northbound. Both women had been raped and strangled. Detectives linked the cases early on, but despite the country’s biggest-ever manhunt, their killer was never caught. The link was confirmed in 1990, yet the murders remain unsolved.
