What’s my lump? Q There’s a lump in my eyelid which my optician called a meibomian cyst. What’s that? Carla, Edenbridge A It’s simply a blocked gland and isn’t dangerous, though can be a nuisance. Inside your eyelid are glands which produce oil to lubricate your eye. When one gland blocks, either out of the blue or after becoming infected (a stye), fluid collects inside, leaving a swollen, roughly pea-sized lump inside your upper eyelid. A small cyst may cause no symptoms, but a larger one might irritate or rarely become painful, and can distort the front of your eye leading to blurred vision.
