This summer, the inquiry into five children’s homes run by south London’s Lambeth Council found a ‘culture of cover-up’ allowed more than 700 young victims to be drugged, tortured and sexually assaulted from the 1960s to the 1990s. The Independent Inquiry Child Sexual Abuse report found that staff treated children like they were worthless, allowing paedophiles to infiltrate children’s homes and foster care. Shirley Oaks was singled out as a ‘brutal’ place ‘where violence and sexual assault were allowed to flourish’. Allegations of abuse were made against 177 staff members, involving 529 former residents. WHAT’S THE VERDICT? It took just 46 minutes for the jury to convict Ronald O’Bryan of murdering his son, and of attempting to murder four other children.
