When Henry Lallow (otherwise Lillow), mariner of his Majesty’s ship Greyhound, signed his last will and testament in 1756, he wrote: “Considering the dangers of the seas and the uncertainties of this transitory life, and to avoid controversy, I am leaving all my worldly estate to my brother, Clear Lallow, mariner, of Newport in the Isle of Wight, and my body to the earth or the seas as it shall please God.” The siblings were descended from Issacc La Lau, who had fled to London from ‘Clermont’ in Picardy, France, in the late 1600s, to escape religious persecution.
