It was a chance encounter with Carl Whitewood at the Classic Boat awards party that led me to Hampshire, at the western end of the South Downs National Park, in late April. Carl, all of 30 years old, and brought up in Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight, has started a boatyard restoring classics, seemingly out of nowhere, although as we talk, it becomes apparent that Carl has had a lot of experience in his three decades on earth, starting out in an Optimist, then doing work to various of neighbour and local sailor John Caulcutt’s boats as a teen, then launching a brokerage for classics in 2020.
