THE GROUP B SUCCESSOR
Back in the mid ’80s, a new Group S class was proposed in world championship rallying, designed to supercede the outlandish Group B cars.
The new regulations proposed a minimum weight of 1000 kg, and in attempt to regulate a maximum power output to 300 bhp, the Group S rules were to allow 2.4-litre normally aspirated and 1.2-litre forced-induction engines. A minimum of 10 cars had to be built, with mandatory side, front and vertical impact tests, and obligatory steel roll cages.
Audi, Lancia, Peugeot and Toyota all started to develop cars, the Italian and French manufacturers developing designs based on the existing Group B S4 and T16 respectively, while Toyota’s was an all-new spaceframe design, with Mk1 MR2-style bodywork. Sadly for us,…
